HIV/AIDS, the rise of the Evangelical extremist movement, increased violence, defrockings, theological attacks – the events of the 1980s and 1990s catalyzed many LGBTQIA Christians into advocacy, both within their denominations and in the public square. How did faith motivate so many to emerge from the safe spaces of our sanctuary communities to become advocates for health care, gender equality, equal protection laws, and changes in dogma? What impact did the increasing visibility of the LGBTQIA community in society have on queer religious groups? How did what happened three decades ago lead to today’s challenges and successes?
