Brown was ordained and consecrated as the tenth bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Maine – the first openly gay man to be elected to that church office in this state. (The Maine diocese is made up of more than 10,000 people in 59 churches and ministries from Kittery to Fort Kent.) Prior to coming to Maine, Thomas served parishes in Brattleboro, VT and Winchester, MA. In an earlier interview, Bishop Brown reflected on how New Hampshire some 16 years ago had elected the first openly gay man, Gene Robinson, as bishop of that diocese. Title A name given to the resource Bobbi Keppel Subject The topic of the resource Queer Spirit Podcast Description An account of the resource Bobbi Keppel is an educator, activist, writer, and lover of folk music, who co-founded a Folk Song Society when she lived in Omaha, Nebraska, and in more recent years has belonged to a hospice choir singing to people in end-of-life care. Originally from Washington, D.C., Bobbi graduated from Oberlin College in 1955, but not before completing a year of study abroad at University College, London, where she became a lifetime member of the Debating Society. If you know Bobbi, you can attest to the fact that, even as she approaches her 90th year, she’s lost neither her skills nor her wit as a conversationalist or as a debater. Like many women of her generation, Bobbi married and had two children. Like some women of her generation, she had her own career and worked as a social worker for more than thirty years. But like far fewer women of her generation, at age 43 Bobbi courageously came out as bisexual and became an influential educator and advocate for bisexual rights and for greater recognition of gender and sexual diversity. Her “coming out” essay in the widely-read anthology Bi Any Other Name: Bisexual People Speak Out helped publicize the bisexual movement not only within the U.S., but in other countries, as well. In 1991, she co-founded the Unitarian Universalist Bisexual Network, which later merged into Interweave, the UUA’s queer network. In another essay entitled “Swimming Upstream: Queer Families and Change,” Bobbi wrote this: “In my lifetime, I have been married and monogamous, married and non-monogamous (with men), married and non-monogamous (with women), widowed, single and monogamous with women, single and non-monogamous with married bisexual women, single and non-monogamous with married bisexual men. Some of these relationships have felt like family; others have not. So, what is family? These days, it can be whatever you understand it to be for you. You can even design your own. In 1974 Carter was one of the eleven women ordained “irregularly” to the Episcopal priesthood, and in 1979 she was among the first religious leaders in North America to “come out” as lesbian. As a priest and teacher, she has spent her life working on the boundaries of organized religion with those who live and work on borders of church and world and with groups representing different identities, ideologies, and issues. Her publications include such titles as The Redemption of God: A Theology of Mutual Relation, Our Passion for Justice, Touching Our Strength: The Erotic as Power and the Love of God, and Saving Jesus from Those Who Are Right: What It Means to Be Christian. Carter’s most recent book is now in press and will be released in early September from Littlefield and Rowman. It has this intriguing title: “The Seven Deadly Sins of White Christian Nationalism: A Call to Action.” Of all her publications in her long and distinguished career, Carter describes this book as her most consequential. She attends college as an adult learner and works part-time while also parenting two young adults from a distance, one of whom identifies as transgender. Like Tamara Torres-McGovern and Marvin, Gail is a seminary graduate. All three of have degrees from Union Theological Seminary in New York. More recently, Gail has earned a Master of Fine Arts degree in Creative Writing from the University of Southern Maine’s prestigious Stone Coast program. Gail is also an activist for racial, economic, and social justice, a set of commitments which she traces back to East Harlem in the 1960s and which were further deepened by her time living in southern Africa. Reflecting on these matters, Gail has co-edited a book entitled 'No Easy Victories: African Liberation and American Activists Over a Half Century, 1950-2000.' Title A name given to the resource Howard Solomon Subject The topic of the resource Queer Spirit Podcast Description An account of the resource Howard Solomon is an academic historian and community activist who, in an earlier life, served for over 30 years on the faculty of Tufts University and taught courses on European history, the history of sexuality, and the history of stereotyping. Howard has also been a scholar in residence at the Sampson Center for Diversity at the University of Southern Maine. Among other projects, he curated a traveling exhibition about Charlie Howard, the young gay man who was murdered in the early 1980’s in Bangor by three high-school boys, entitled “Twenty Years Later: How Far Has Maine Come?” He’s also spoken throughout Maine on antisemitism and continued to write, including an essay about the creation of Portland as a so-called “gay mecca.” Over the years Howard’s community engagements have included Merrymeeting Arts Center, the Maine Task Force on LGBT Youth, Maine Jewish Film Festival, Maine Initiatives, the Matlovitch Society, and the National Coalition Building Institute. In 2007 Equality Maine recognized Howard for being the remarkable queer treasure that he is by giving him a lifetime achievement award, which might give some folks the impression that Howard has slowed down or even entered his dotage. Not so, because Howard keeps shifting gears and in recent years has been devoting more time and energy to producing art, especially collage and found-object sculpture. Marvin Ellison, Ph.D. (he/him) is a person of faith and a gay man whose career has unfolded at the intersection of these core identities. In 1994 Marvin founded the Religious Coalition Against Discrimination in Maine to support civil rights protections for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people, including the right to marry. In 1997 he founded the Maine Interfaith Council for Reproductive Choices. He has served on the “Out In Scripture” Advisory Board of the Human Rights Campaign’s Religion and Faith Project and the Advisory Board of the Religious Institute for Sexual Morality, Justice, and Healing. After serving on the board of Planned Parenthood of Northern New England. He founded a volunteer chaplaincy program at the health clinic in Portland. He developed and co-hosted the “Queer Spirit” radio series, a program sponsored by OUT Cast radio on WMPG and WERU, two community radio stations in Maine.
