A green priestly stole of Ordinary Time was donated on my behalf by the San Fernando Valley, CA, local chapter of Dignity USA. As an ordained Roman Catholic deacon, I contribute to the liturgical life of this community by assisting at Mass, cantoring, and presiding over prayer services, as well as volunteering for other events. It is through their sponsorship and encouragement that I am participating in the Shower of Stoles. As a personal symbol, the star pattern on my stole is similar to a design I used to decorate my confirmation stole (Bonaventure is my confirmation name). Frogs and toads are my personal totem. The stole reflects a chapter dedication to creation spirituality, the Green Man, and the annual celebration of Earth Day.

I first thought about a vocation to the priesthood in second grade, in between paramedic and lawyer, or maybe between police officer and doctor. I gave it more serious consideration in 1987 after I finished my undergraduate degree at UC Santa Cruz, and came back home after college. As part of the process of applying to seminary, I had the unfortunate occasion of being interviewed by Joseph Nicolosi (the founder of NARTH), who at that time was still approved by the Archdiocese of Los Angeles to screen candidates. He came to the conclusion that I had chosen priesthood as a way to avoid confronting my homosexuality and that I should enter into therapy with him in order to be cured of my affliction. At that point in my life I considered myself "bisexual" and was fearful of the labels "homosexual" or "gay." I knew nothing of Nicolosi nor his bigoted views or skewed philosophy, but I did know I did not want to enter into therapy with this slimy man who used the occasion of an archdiocese psychological assessment to attempt to increase his own private practice. However, as a result of his remarks in the report, I began mandated psychotherapy with a variety of clinicians that continued on and off throughout my time with the archdiocese.

For the most part I thoroughly enjoyed my seminary and field study experiences through St. John's Seminary in Camarillo, CA. My parish internship was at St. Finbar Catholic Community in Burbank, CA. It was not until my final evaluation after four and a half years of theological study that the seminary faculty raised any concerns about my worthiness as a candidate for priesthood. I was not ordained to the transitional deaconate with my classmates, but instead was postponed a few months and then afforded a special ceremony. On June 29, 1993, the solemn feast day of Saints Peter and Paul, I was ordained in my home parish of St. John Fisher in Rancho Palos Verdes, CA, the same church in which I have received all my other sacraments. As a founding member of the parish (in 1961), my mother was particularly thrilled that mine was the first ordination ceremony to be performed within the church building. I was assigned for six months to St. James in Redondo Beach, CA, and for another six months at St. Rose of Lima in Simi Valley, CA. I served as a deacon for four years as my priestly vocation continued to be questioned and ordination postponed. Throughout that time I led Bible Study and facilitated small group work. I was hired by the parish of St. Francis de Sales in Sherman Oaks, CA (an "unofficial" assignment), and coordinated adult education and the high school confirmation program for a couple of years. After an official placement in Holy Spirit parish in Mid-City Los Angeles, an ordination ceremony was finally scheduled for July 25, 1997, the feast day of St. James the Greater. It was cancelled at the last minute when the Cardinal Archbishop decided that he would not ordain an openly gay man to the priesthood. In my ten year pursuit, I went from being "bisexual," to fully claiming my homosexuality. My transitional deaconate has turned into a permanent one. To date in 2007 after another ten years, I have not sought priestly ordination through any other avenue.
</text>

EMPOWERED BY THE SPIRIT,
LIMITED BY MY CHURCH

My journey to ministry in the Roman Catholic Church has been one of grace. I was not active in my church growing up. In college, I became active in Campus Ministry and it changed my life. I learned that God is love; that we are created in the image and likeness of God and therefore we have inherent dignity and worth.

Studying theology in graduate school and preparing to minister within my church was incredibly empowering. My course work opened my eyes to a whole new way of seeing the world. I was introduced to liberation theology and social justice. I knew that I was called to be a campus minister. Then, I came out, and discovered what the Roman Catholic Church teaches about ''homosexuals''. I realized that my relationship with my partner is considered "intrinsically evil and objectively disordered". I have yet to discover how that label helps me to know that I am created in the image of God and have inherent dignity and worth.

Serving in official church ministry, I quickly discovered the limitations placed on me as a lesbian in a covenant relationship. My ministry became a difficult and painful cross. I loved the work I knew as a campus minister. I was in a graced place to help students struggling to find their places in the world as people of faith. I love my Church, and its social justice theology. However, the deep sadness of not being able to be fully myself, not being able to allow the people to know me, was degrading. To constantly have to play the pronoun game, to deny my relationship with the woman that I love, who has taught me what God’s love is, and what God’s Grace is, was too much.

I have left the ministry that I love because I could no longer stand living in constant dichotomy. I remain active in ministry outside the bounds of denominational politics and control. I am Empowered by the Spirit. I have answered my call. It is my church’s choice not to value the gifts of LGBT community brings to ministry, but I will stay faithful to the Spirit who calls.

Against that background, aspects of our being, such as being lesbians, were visible and received. Teachers, parishioners, colleagues and friends have encouraged us. Although our ministries were refused from time to time, even in the most glaring instance, homophobia was never the only factor in the decision. Other gay men and lesbian women pushed against institutional homophobia before us, so our way was smoothed considerably.

Were they allowed, the women and men behind the stoles in this exhibit could give so much to the world so in need of healing! We are daily grateful to Unitarian Universalist Association, congregations and our seminary for giving us opportunity after opportunity to serve.

Mennonite culture is in the very marrow of my bones. I grew up steeped in four-part harmony and was mentored, encouraged and inspired as a musician in that rich, musical faith. I envisioned a future for myself that allowed me to integrate my faith with my gifts as a musician, organizer and activist.

After my partner and I married in the early 90’s, the doors of the Mennonite church were abruptly closed to me. I was no longer invited to conduct, lead singing, write or compose within the denomination. I went from working in the Mennonite denomination to searching for a completely new vocation.

I smile now at the irony of the Mennonite denomination’s exclusion of gay, lesbian and bisexual Christians. For the past decade I have made my living conducting an 80-voice GLBT community chorus. We work at social change through music in order to make our world a more welcoming place. This GLBT community has become the ultimate beneficiary of the gifts, lessons and skills afforded me by the Mennonite church as I plan concerts, conduct, compose, and collaborate with other denominations, communities and arts organizations.
</text>

There are days I still can’t believe my good fortune. I wake every morning beside my partner to the sound of our three year old daughter attempting to climb into our bed and (on good days) after a prayer of thanksgiving for my life, prepare to begin my day as rabbi of Temple Israel. There was no way I could have imagined when I came out at the age of 16 that this life was possible. I was then attending Yeshiva High School (an Orthodox Jewish high school) and the message was clear that a gay or lesbian relationship was completely outside the realm of holiness. It was also clear that anyone living in a gay or lesbian relationship stood outside of the Tradition and any “family” created out of such a bond could only be a mockery of a Jewish family. As a result of the conflict between my core identities I left Yeshiva High School, Judaism and Jewish life behind me for the rest of high school and college. The void at my center was something I worked hard to ignore most of the time. The few times when I felt compelled to engage with Judaism like the High Holidays or Passover, I would touch such pain that I resolved to keep my distance from it for another year. It was in attending a Reconstructionist service at a gay and lesbian synagogue led by a lesbian rabbi that I began the long journey back to Jewish life and Jewish community and finally, to the rabbinate. The hole in my center has been filled to such an extent that it stretches me ever further open from the inside.

I am so grateful for the generations of courageous leaders on whose shoulder I stand. The people of all faiths and persuasions who have been willing to take serious risks with their lives and who, in so doing changed people’s hearts and minds through their integrity, created the possibility of my life as a lesbian rabbi. Their courage and strength of character inspire and sustain me. The people of Duluth and Superior who were willing to hire an out lesbian rabbi for a very public role as the face and voice of non-Orthodox Judaism in the Arrowhead region displayed a depth of integrity and openness to change that continues to humble me. I am truly privileged to serve as their rabbi and teacher, honored to be asked to their hospital rooms and homes, and have been transformed by being entrusted with their stories and their struggles. It is all of those who have gone before me who have earned the honor of this tallit. It is the good people, Jewish and non-Jewish alike, of the Twin Ports who deserve to have it on display in honor of their leader. I am grateful beyond measure to all of them and to those of you living and celebrating the uniqueness of your own challenging and holy lives.
</text>

This stole is from the Gay Straight Christian Alliance of Delaware, Ohio. We exist to provide spiritual sanctuary to all of God’s diverse creation. Yet at the same time we also bear witness to the churches in our surrounding community and larger world that God’s love is for all and that no church need ever be closed to those seeking to find communion with God there.

We created this signature stole during an ecumenical worship service to honor our GLBT sisters and brothers who have been gravely wounded by the church in their striving to live out their call to ministry. Some of them are among us here in central Ohio. We pray for the day when our GLBT pastors will weep no more.

To the curator of the stoles:

On behalf of the Delaware (OH) Gay Straight Christian Alliance and with great joy, I send you this signature stole which we crated during an ecumenical worship service. We hosted a portion of the SOS collection during the afternoon as an open, public showing and then followed with a worship service to honor all of our GLBT siblings who have been wounded in the course of living out their calls to ministry. At the conclusion of the service, all who wished to participate signed this stole, which was hand-made by a member of our group. Please know that there were many tears shed over this stole, both by those who signed and by those who could not yet, for their pain is still too fresh and intense.

We are honored to be part of this tremendously powerful and important project. Thank you for keeping this witness alive as a reminder that our work is not yet done and as a sign of hope that God still moves among us.

Sincerely

              <text>
Steve Greenberg
Congregation Shir Tikvah
Union for Reform Judaism (in North America)
Minneapolis, MN

My grandfather gave me this tallis – my first tallis – for my bar mitzvah in November 1966. At the time, I already knew something seemed different about me, because I was definitely attracted to boys. I also figured at such a young age that I had a number of years to outgrow it or get over it. About nine years later, I talked to my rabbi about the same feelings, and he simply told me to ignore them.

It is now almost exactly 40 years after my bar mitzvah. In the interim, I’ve led a synagogue contingent in song as we marched down Market Street in San Francisco in the GLBT Pride Parade, got the spectators to sing “Hava Nagilah” with us a few times, and have served as chazzan (cantor) for numerous prayer services in many settings around the country.

Larry, my partner of nine years, accompanies me for most of the services that are out-of-state, and we find much support and warmth among the congregations that host us.

My siblings and Mom love Larry, and I truly believe if my Dad were still alive, he would’ve adored him, too. There was a time early on when my Mom though it would be nice if Larry were to marry my sister – who is single. He seemed like a nice Jewish boy and that’s what she wanted for her daughter. But over the years, Mom has embraced reality, and at the end of our phone conversations, she tells me to kiss Larry goodnight.

When I told Larry I was going to donate my bar mitzvah tallis to the Stoles Project, he wondered how I would feel to part with my first tallis. I brought up the scene from the movie Harold and Maude. There was a point where Harold gave Maude a ring, and she promptly tossed it into the lake. To Harold’s dismay, she responded, “Now I’ll always know where it is.” My tallis is safe with all the other stoles and tallitot (plural) here, and I’ll always know where to find it.

- January 2007

PS: I’m pleased to write that my rabbi, who told me 30 years ago to “ignore those feelings,” has since sermonized about loving and embracing the GLBT people around us.
</text>

This stole was signed by more than 80 worshippers at the 2006 WOW Interfaith Worship Celebration in Danville, CA in solidarity with and recognition of GLBT persons of faith who have faced painful choices between their faith calling and being true to their own sexual identity.

This was the fifth annual WOW event where clergy and congregants from 20 communities of faith representing 11 denominations and faith traditions have gathered to celebrate our GLBT neighbors in the valleys surrounding Mt. Diablo, east of San Francisco. WOW is the result of the need for inclusive faith communities to “come out of the closet” and let the world know that, as children of God, we all are created in the image of the Divine. Having been surrounded by the Shower of Stoles for five years, we felt it was time to contribute a stole on behalf of our community.

Denominations and faith traditions represented are: American Baptist, Catholic, Disciples of Christ, Episcopal, Jewish, Lutheran, United Methodist, Presbyterian, Unitarian Universalist, United Church of Christ, and Unity. We are also sponsored by five chapters of PFLAG, GLSEN, That All May Freely Serve, and the Pacific School of Religion’s Center for Lesbian and Gay Studies in Religion and Ministry.
</text>

I left that church,
and all churches for a period of my life.

But God never stopped calling me…

As a middle-aged woman, I began the journey to ministry
in my church of many adult years, only to be told that
I was not called – due solely to my sexual orientation.

Both God and I wept, but…
Knowing who I was…
Knowing whose I was…
Knowing that my God does not make mistakes…
I sought out a spiritual home, and was led to
The United Church of Christ!

I was loved, cared for, mentored, and ordained in this
Christ-centered, unifying denomination. I continue to
serve the UCC in parish ministry, reaching out in service
and mission to our communities and our world.
