Over the years we were asked a number of times to change something written on a stole, ususally because someone who had been closeted was now out and wanted to add their name, or to amend a story. This particular stole saw three different manifestations. We first received it in 1995, identified only by the initials "E.B." About a year later, Erwin sent us a letter telling us that he had decided to leave his very successful youth ministry position at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Minneapolis. He and his partner were planning a commitment ceremony, and he no longer felt he could remain closeted. Although he felt this would be the end of his career in parish ministry, he wasn't sure what would come next, so he asked that we add his new story anonymously. About a year later, though, Erwin finally was ready to add the third and most important piece to his stole -- his full name. Erwin was President of the founding Board of the Shower of Stoles Project before returning to graduate school to pursue a PhD in ethics. He is now living in California. It is, in fact, one of the very first stoles given to us. Jack and I were in attendance as observers at the General Assembly in the summer of 1995, just weeks before I was scheduled to meet before my presbytery to relinquish my ordination. When Jack heard this news, he went out and bought a plain white stole, hand-wrote this message on it, and gave it to me, telling me to take it with me to that meeting so I would know that I was not alone. If anyone would know the pain of one unable to follow their call, it would be Jack. Jack was called upon twice to serve his church as an ordained elder, a lay leader in a Presbyterian congregation. Both times he refused to accept that call, knowing that the costly litigation and upheaval that would surely follow that act of ordination would be far too much for his small congregation to bear. It was, therefore, an honor for me to have Jack's stole with me on that September day. Flanked by his and dozens of other stoles from friends and colleagues, I knew that I truly was surrounded by a faithful "cloud of witnesses." Christopher Harris, M.D., Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at the Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt University, has been a pediatrician for twenty years. A gay African-American with a 3-year-old daughter, Harris was invited in 2005 to testify before a U.S. Senate subcommittee about the Federal Marriage Amendment and explain why denying same-sex couples the right to marry would negatively impact the health and security of their children. He is one of more than 750 pediatricians who organized to oppose the Federal Marriage Amendment. Dr. Harris is an ordained Presbyterian Elder and was active in the More Light movement in Cincinnati and Nashville. He helped create the More Light Task Force at Mt. Auburn Presbyterian Church in Cincinnati, a congregation which has been on the forefront of the Welcoming movement for many years. Denomination Presbyterian Church (USA) Contribution Date 2001 Contribution Story This is one of about two dozen stoles donated by staff and members of Downtown United Presbyterian Church. DUPC was at the center of a pivotal moment in the history of the Welcoming movement in the Presbyterian Church. In 1978 the General Assembly acted to bar the ordination of "self-avowed, practicing homosexuals." However, an exception was added to the action which exempted those ordained before 1978 from future judicial action. This clause allowed DUPC in 1991 to call the Rev. Dr. Jane Adams Spahr to become a co-pastor of the church; Janie had been ordained prior to 1978. However, the Presbyterian Church broke its trust and in 1991 the denomination's highest judicial body barred Janie from being installed. In response, DUPC called Janie to be an "Evangelist," and formed That All May Freely Serve to allow Janie to preach, educate and challenge church structures at DUPC and throughout the country. WHPC was at the forefront of the civil rights movement in Los Angeles and in the early 1960's began to close each service by singing the civil rights anthem "We Shall Overcome" - a tradition that continues to this day. As early as 1964 (five years before the Stonewall rebellion), West Hollywood Presbyterian Church hosted what is believed to be the first openly Gay Men's "Rap" Group in the city of Los Angeles and the church began to minister to the spiritual needs of the Gay & Lesbian community who had been drawn by its message of inclusiveness. Soon nationally known spiritual author Chris Glaser would launch "The Lazarus Project" at WHPC - a program to advocate for Gay & Lesbian spiritual and human rights. In October of 1984, WHPC called an openly gay man, the Reverend Dan Smith, to serve as its pastor. Dan continues to be the only minister in the country serving a Presbyterian congregation who went through the entire call and installation process as an "out" gay man. While proudly continuing its tradition of progressive spirituality and activism, this multi-cultural congregation feeds approximately 4,000 hungry and homeless people each year, builds homes for economically-challenged families under the "Habitat for Humanity" program, offers an HIV Spiritual Support Group, provides a "Children's Church" program and continues to openly take stands on political issues involving civil rights. West Hollywood Presbyterian also claims to espouse a theology that is "perhaps the most pro-feminist in Los Angeles."
