Glynn Moreland Stole Text GLYNN MORELAND FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH RICHMOND, VIRGINIA Glynn Moreland was Richmond, Virginia's first PLGC Chapter President in the early 1990s. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church and loved singing in the church choir. He worked at the Richmond Chamber of Commerce and the last few years of his life at the Fan Free Clinic. Glynn was an out gay man. He never quit believing that his church was inclusive and would eventually stop its practice of discriminating against gays, lesbians, bisexuals, and transgendered. And he worked for inclusivity with PLGC, in his own church community and at the Presbytery level. Glynn had a lot of style. The stole's appliques reflect some aspects of his life and personality. He organized a benefit to raise money for HIV/AIDS that event was called Heartstings and that is the prominent theme of the stole. A Virginia Tech alumnus, he was an avid Virginia Tech football fan. He grew up on a farm, and was equally comfortable talking with farmers and retail people. He collected teapots and decorated his house with large flowers, which he called a house broach. He loved Christmas. Glynn died in the mid 1990s from complications from AIDS. His funeral was held at First Presbyterian Church. His beloved choir sang. Many friends were there. He is truly missed. Denomination Presbyterian Church (USA) Contribution Date 2004 Contribution Story Glynn, Dorothy and Lisa were faithful Presbyterians who, although living and attending church in a decidedly conservative area, believed in the best that the Presbyterian Church could be and held out hope that the church would come to love them as much as they loved the church. All three were active in the Richmond Chapter of Presbyterians for Lesbian and Gay Concerns (later called More Light Presbyterians), and Dorothy served on the national board of PLGC. Glynn died with his vision for a welcoming church unfulfilled. Dorothy and Lisa were later driven out of their own congregation by a cadre of homophobic members who took offense to Lisa's having been invited to read the scripture in church one Sunday, and they left the denomination for good. This very brief story offers a poignant glimpse into the isolation experienced by so many closeted pastors. That painful loneliness is palpable in this poetic image: "...it sometimes feels as if I am crossing a bridge to meet someone and, just as we are about to embrace in the middle of the bridge, the center falls away." The church has forced so many pastors into a terrible bind -- on the one hand sharing so deeply in the lives of their parishioners, on the other hand having to tread carefully so as to share as little as possible in return. It is no wonder that pastors who have come out and left parish ministry often describe their life in the closet as "exhausting." We who are lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender have come to the middle of the bridge. It is time -- past time -- for the church to come and meet us half way, and to embrace us fully. TOM PHILIPP Given by Bob and Vergene Wieman Campus Chaplain and for more than 15 years pastor of the Community Presbyterian Church in Merrick, Long Island, New York. A great pastor, counselor, presbyter and friend. Tom came out at the 1978 General Assembly when the "definitive guidance" was first enunciated. The next year he was elected Moderator of Long Island Presbytery and served in that capacity in 1980. Donna Riley Stole Text DONNA RILEY Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania To the leaders of San Marino Community Church (San Marino, CA) who nurtured me in the faith: You taught me from infancy that Jesus loves me. You helped me memorize the Lord's Prayer at six, the books of the Bible and the twenty-third Psalm at eight, and the Apostle's Creed at fourteen. Youth choir showed me the power of praising God through music. You provided me with dynamic junior- and senior-high programs and mountain-top experiences at Forest Home and Camp O-Ongo. Your rigorous eighteen-month Confirmation class taught me church history, theology and polity and the responsibilities of membership. You facilitated my growth as a passionately committed Christian and Presbyterian. You fostered my sense of integrity which enabled me to face the challenges of coming out to my family and current congregation (Sixth Presbyterian, Pittsburgh), who welcomed me with open arms. Donna received her Ph.D. in engineering and public policy from Carnegie Mellon University and her B.S.E. in chemical engineering from Princeton University. She was the Clayton Postdoctoral Fellow in Industrial Ecology at the Center for Energy and Environmental Studies at Princeton University and later was awarded the AAAS Environmental Science and Engineering Fellowship assigned to the Superfund Office of the Environmental Protection Agency. In 2002, Donna became one of a select number of academics chosen to form the inaugural faculty of the new engineering department at Smith College, the first such department at a women's college in the U.S. Donna is also a woman of integrity and faith. A life-long Presbyterian, ordained Deacon, and bisexual woman, Donna served as the Co-Moderator of the national board of More Light Presbyterians, working for the full inclusion of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender persons into the life and leadership of the Presbyterian Church. On a number of occasions Donna talked with me about making a stole for the collection. Her hesitancy came in trying to shape a narrative. Instead of focusing on her own story, she found herself wishing she could have a conversation about her experience as a bisexual woman of faith with the church of her childhood -- a church which once embraced her but would now just as passionately reject her. At one point I suggested to her, "Why don't you just write a letter to your home church. Even if you never send it to them, it would give you a chance to say what's on your heart." Soon thereafter, Donna sent me a stole with this letter -- a simple, eloquent statement of faith. It is, I believe, a letter that could be written to churches everywhere. Elizabeth Rice and Alice Hageman, ordained in 1974 and 1975 respectively, were the first women to serve as pastors at a Back Bay church. When they were joined by Donna Day Lower, the church became the only one in the United States with three women clergy. Since opening the "Women's Lunch Place" in 1982, the church has served as a haven for poor women and their children. It is fitting, then, that one of the Tiffany windows is "Four Women of the Bible," including Miriam, Deborah, Mary of Bethany, and Dorcas.
