This is the first Signature Stole we received from McCormick Theological Seminary; we received three other stoles in later years. My visit to McCormick in 1998, during which this stole was dedicated, was the first time I had returned to my alma mater in almost twenty years. It was in the arms of McCormick that my inner commitment to social justice was given language, structure and theological context. More important, this academic study was connected solidly to the human condition, to issues of racism, sexism, economic injustice, violence and war. I left McCormick a far different person -- a far better person -- than when I began. In 1998, now "out of the closet" and with two decades of human rights work behind me, it was a gift to be able to return to this place and say, "Thank you!" Although I was forced to leave ordained ministry behind eleven years ago -- and two years ago I left the Presbyterian Church altogether -- I will always be deeply grateful for the education I received at McCormick. It made me the person I am today -- and that, in so many ways, is what made the vision for this Shower of Stoles possible. May they know they are Beloved of God Denomination Presbyterian Church (USA) Contribution Date 2001 Contribution Story Over the years I made a number of trips to McCormick Theological Seminary, my alma mater. With a longstanding commitment to diversity, McCormick is the only historically Euro-centric seminary in the Presbyterian denomination in which Whites are now in the minority. This commitment to diversity has made McCormick a relatively safe place for LGBT students over the years, but that same diverse student body -- with large numbers of Koreans, African-Americans, native Africans and Hispanics from a wide range of countries and religious backgrounds -- has kept the conversation lively around LGBT issues. Some students have used these opportunities to come out and tell their stories; others have found it more difficult to do so in such an intense and intimate environment. On this particular trip, about a dozen new stoles were dedicated on behalf of McCormick students. Several were named, and included substantial stories. A few, however, acknowledged those students who still struggled to find their voice. The final line on this stole, itself created by an unknown donor, is both a declaration of faith and a compassionate prayer. John Stippich Stole Text In memory of John Stippich 1961-1991 John was the youngest person ever to serve on the session at Roanoke Presbyterian Church, Kansas City, Missouri. After John had moved to another city, that same session, at the instigation of a new pastor, took a formal position against the ordination of gays. Denomination Presbyterian Church (USA) Contribution Date 1995 Contribution Story This is is one of twelve stoles donated by Merrill Proudfoot in honor of friends and colleagues. John and Merrill both attended Roanoke Presbyterian Church. John was an Elder at Roanoke until he moved away. He met an untimely death at the age of 30. As is suggested in the story, Roanoke was for many years very supportive of LGBT folk and counted many among their members and leadership. This changed rapidly when a new, conservative pastor arrived and aggressively initiated a number of actions that created an openly hostile environment for the LGBT members who were still active in the church. All of them, including Merrill, soon left. Roanoke was located in the heart of a young, progressive, gay-friendly neighborhood in Kansas City, and was just down the road from the Kansas City campus of the University of Kansas. Sadly, this church, which once had a bright future with the opportunity to be in mission to a large unchurched population, soon gained a decidedly negative reputation in the area. The church is now closed. I hung this one stole in a prominent place in the Assembly's exhibit hall, and at every event sponsored by a progressive organization, hoping someone might come forward and tell me something more about the donor. Lynn Lampman Stole Text REV. LYNN LAMPMAN The Presbyterian Church, USA had been the only spiritual home I had ever known. Yet, it was a place where I was feeling less and less at home. There was continual fighting in the "house" (Presbytery meetings and General Assembly) and then one day, I was locked out of the house -- via an amendment. Yes, I could have stayed, but who wants to live like that -- continually judged, on the outside of the inner circle, stereotyped and scorned. So, three years ago I left the PC(USA) and went to the United Church of Christ. When I left the PC(USA), I wept for quite a while. But, in the end I knew the UCC was a right "home" for me. For in the UCC, I am seen as a whole person (not solely as a lesbian). That's all I ever wanted: to be seen as a whole person. The UCC recognizes my gifts for ministry, and I am now serving as a Committee on Ministry chairperson. In light of all this, I am sending a stole which I have had since I was a seminarian. A stole which I wore for 13 1/2 years while a minister in the PC(USA). It has not gone with me into the UCC. It reminds me of the painful past, not the wonderful present and bright future. These stoles serve the dual purpose of showing support for LGBT persons, while also protecting their anonymity by including their names as "one among many".) The Shower of Stoles Project owes its very existence to St. Luke Presbyterian Church, a More Light congregation working for the full inclusion of LGBT persons into the full life and leadership of the church. St. Luke, founded in the 1960's, is situated in one of the wealthiest communities in Minnesota. Although architects presented various plans for opulent, multi-million dollar sanctuaries, St. Luke's first members chose instead to build a very simple, low maintenance, multi-use building that would allow them to commit more of their financial resources to social justice causes. (To this day, St. Luke's lack of air conditioning and rough gravel parking lot are a source of pride for their members.) This allowed them to institute a policy of "One-to-One Giving," mandating the church to give away one dollar for every dollar spent on themselves. Thus, when faced with the need to tear down and rebuild their education wing last year, the budget for their capital fund drive was set for double the amount needed for construction, and plans were made to give away the additional hundreds of thousands of dollars to affordable housing, peacemaking and human rights causes locally and throughout the world. It was this visionary financial commitment, coupled with a desire to fund new projects not supported by more traditional funding sources, that made it possible for my partner, Tammy, and I to turn a serendipitous event into an international project. By late 1996, my partner, Tammy and I had collected well over three hundred stoles -- kept in plastic trash bags and old suitcases -- and we were beginning to get requests for displays from dozens of churches. At the time we were not an incorporated project, had no legal status and no funding; Tammy and I paid for these first displays out of our own pockets. Since we had both returned to school, however, and had very meager income from part-time jobs, we soon hit the financial wall. Two churches, St. Luke and First United Church of Oak Park, IL, sensed the importance of what we had in our hands and decided to take a chance. Both churches wrote us a check for a few thousand dollars with instructions to get the stoles out of trash bags and find a way to share them with the world. The end result, we believe, is far greater than any of us could possibly have imagined. This signature stole was given to us on New Year's Day 1997, when Tammy and I traveled to Minnesota to thank St. Luke for its gift, and to share a display of the stoles with the congregation. Over the years, St. Luke has remained the single largest benefactor of the Shower of Stoles Project. In 2002 two St. Luke members, Beth Chaplin and TJ Worrell, donated their professional services to create the acclaimed video, "So Great a Cloud of Witnesses: The Story of the Shower of Stoles Project." It is safe to say that thousands of LGBT people of faith around the world, long silenced by their faith communities, now know that their stories will be given voice thanks to this one remarkable congregation. Stole Text ANONYMOUS Ohio I grew up as a child of the Presbyterian Church and entered adulthood secure in its bounds. In my middle years I felt keenly the call to ministry. But since my late teens I had known clearly - though had not chosen to live - my lesbian orientation and identity, and by the time I felt the sense of call the church had taken official action that would prevent my ordination as Minister of Word and Sacrament. Thus, although I longed to attend seminary and seriously considered enrolling, I finally concluded that I would have to find other ways to respond to God's call. Today, I serve the congregation of which I am a member as I am able and in silence. My professional work is with young adults, many of whom are openly struggling on their faith journeys, engaging in questions of identity and vocation, squaring off against the constraints our church imposes on them. I believe that by listening to these young persons, by hearing them into speech, I am in some way, if only partially, fulfilling my call. May all of us join with the next generation in prayer, work and hope, that together we may birth an open and affirming community of faith. Any talents or skills that God had given me were irrelevant and secondary to the fact that I was a lesbian. Through college and beyond I started to realize that this did not represent God. Finally, many years later, I have found a congregation where all people are welcome, no exceptions, no distinctions. The denomination, however, still wants to make distinctions, to keep gay people from serving and leading regardless of any talents and skills that God has given them. I hope that this denomination chooses to represent God more accurately, and stops putting bushels over any of the lights that God has created. This is the first signature stole to become a part of the Shower of Stoles collection. A gift from my parents, and made by my good friend Cynthia Ogletree, the first signatures were allies from Heartland Presbytery who were present on Sept. 16, 1995, when I set aside my ordination. More signatures were added a few weeks later when the governing boards of Presbyterians for Lesbian and Gay Concerns (PLGC) and the More Light Churches Network (MLCN) came to Kansas City for a joint meeting. A few additional signatures were added at the MLCN national conference in early 1996, but new signature stoles were already in the making by the time of this conference. Cynthia Ogletree made the pattern for this stole by reproducing the construction of what is believed to be the oldest stole in the collection, one given by David Hostetter in honor of his daughter (#40). The College of Wooster was founded by Presbyterians, and although it it now fully independent the college maintains close ties to the denomination. Wooster boasts a long commitment to progressive values; the first PhD in the college's history was awarded to a woman, Annie Irish, in 1882. The college admitted its first Black students in the 1880's and has always maintained an internationally diverse student body. Columbia, MD owes much of its heritage to James Rouse, a mortgage banker, developer and most important a visionary who, in the 1960's was the driving force behind the creation of this planned community. At a time when the ecumenical movement was flourishing, Rouse's own commitment to inclusiveness was realized in the creation of the Columbia Interfaith Centers where "the bold, new idea of different religious expressions working together where possible and having independent integrity when needed began... Thus, from early on, Jews, Protestants, and Roman Catholics planned to live together in creative tension to maximize their respective and collective interests." (quote from the CIC website) Four Interfaith Centers, with a fifth being planned, provide facilities for eighteen widely diverse religious congregations. St. John United has been under the CIC umbrella since its founding in 1969. St. John United is a More Light and Open and Affirming congregation, committed to welcoming LGBT persons into the full life and leadership of the church. This is one of two signature stoles from St. John; this one is covered with signatures, the second is dedicated to those who are "serving in silence." These stoles were created for inclusion at the 1996 General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (USA), before the collection expanded into denominations outside the Presbyterian Church. Therefore, only its "More Light" designation was included on the stoles.
