Some 20 members of the group which Saturday had picketed City Hall seeking what they called “liberation” for homosexuals, turned up at City Hall again at noon Monday seeking an audience with Mayor Landrieu. They carried signs bearing such slogans as, “Live the Life You Love,” “No More Police Prosecution of Gays,” and “We are Homosexuals and Proud.” In the group were several woman and some of the men wore flashy attire and drank carrot juice., while others wore more conventional clothing. The march to City Hall was led by the Rev. David Solomon, who identified himself as a Pentecostal clergyman. The Rev. The creation of a city panel composed of people “representing God’s views on homosexuals” was urged here Thursday by the Rev. Bob Harrington. Self-styled “the Chaplain of Bourbon Street,” the Baptist made this suggestion in a press conference at his headquarters in the French Quarter where he has worked for about 10 years. This panel, he said, would be empowered to negotiate with the homosexual community which has recently marched on City Hall and demanded “liberation” and an end to alleged police harassment. God’s view, the preacher explained, is the homosexuality is “an abomination, and He has put a great curse upon it, greater than that on ‘natural’ sins.” CALLS FOR DEBATE The Rev. Harrington also challenged the Rev. David Solomon, a Holiness Pentecostal minister, who has said there are plans to organize a church in New Orleans for the homosexual community, to a debate on what Bible authority he could use for such a move. “If these people think they are right,” he commented, “why do they have to ostracize themselves, why not participate in already existing churches and ‘upgrade’ us?” The Metropolitan Crime Commission, the chaplain said, “has been overinterested in the underworld, when the deterioration of the community is effected much more by homosexuality.” The Rev. Harrington commended the police department for carrying out laws against unnatural acts and protecting “the natural man against the unnatural.” SAID DEGENERATING The tourist trade, the minister said, “will degenerate more when they (homosexuals) are there, then when hippies are around. Homosexuality is an internal thing.” But homosexuality is not confined to the French Quarter,” the chaplain commented” and affects everyone from bank presidents to bums, mostly people who have too much time on their hands.” Homosexuality is not hereditary or a genetic problem, but “a sinful problem,” the Rev. Harrington said, “though they try to blame it on their mothers or society. They chose this way of life so they can change to get rid of it.” People of the city can help the increasing development of this problem, the preacher said, “by warning people of the dangers of homosexuality, like the American Cancer Society warns of the disease’s signals.” Homosexuality has grown more than any other problem (or sin) he has seen, Rev. Harrington said, although he added that it’s usually accompanied by a drug or alcohol problem. Dellevue, owner and operator of a fishing and boat rental concession at the City Park Casino, Monday defended his policy restricting the use of his boats. He responded following the appearance there of the Rev. David E. Solomon, pastor of the Metropolitan Community Church of New Orleans. The Rev. Mr. Solomon protested a sign at the business which reads,” Pedal Boats Not Rented to Two Men or Two Boys or Man and Boy (over 12 years)” He said “the sign has to go. It’s discrimination. Nobody’s going to tell me who I can take out in my boat which I paid for to rent.” The clergyman carried several of his own signs as he picketed on Monday. Dellevue explained why this policy has been strictly enforced since his father started the business in 1929: “Pedals boats are more delicate than other boats because of the moving parts. You get two men or boys in the boat and if one wants to go forward and the other backward the pedals will break off when pressure is exerted too forcibly.” He added, “through my 35 years of experience with these boats, if we did not have such a rule, there would be no pedal boats for anyone. There is too much breakage damage and vandalism on all the boats. You have to protect your business. We’re trying to prevent vandalism, breakage and repair work, which is a year round operation. Solomon, is working hard trying to find a church to rent for worship services. Finally, he tells us “…the Lord directed me to a theater in the back of a bar in the French Quarter. The owner of the bar discussed it, consulted with their attorney, and have made it available to EFP of MCC of New Orleans on Sunday evenings at 7:30 P.M. Free of charge!” The first worship service was held on May 9, 1971, and six people attended. The following Sunday only four appeared, but Rev. Solomon said he has faith in the future of this mission. A salesman he met to order his cassock got so interested in hearing about Metropolitan Community Church that he gave Rev. Solomon the cassock and surplice as a sample. They fit as it tailor-made for him! He asked his landlady about a table she had which was a good size for an altar and she gave it. The bartender at the bar in front of the theater where services will be held donated the candlesticks. One of the members is making the cover for the table and colored runners for the altar—he’s also donating the cloth. Another young man has offerred to try to find a chalice for them. Rev. David Solomon hopes to promote fellowship thru various social activities. A swimming party is planned, and a Shrimp and Crawfish Boil.
