Lynn Lampman Stole Text REV. LYNN LAMPMAN The Presbyterian Church, USA had been the only spiritual home I had ever known. Yet, it was a place where I was feeling less and less at home. There was continual fighting in the "house" (Presbytery meetings and General Assembly) and then one day, I was locked out of the house -- via an amendment. Yes, I could have stayed, but who wants to live like that -- continually judged, on the outside of the inner circle, stereotyped and scorned. So, three years ago I left the PC(USA) and went to the United Church of Christ. When I left the PC(USA), I wept for quite a while. But, in the end I knew the UCC was a right "home" for me. For in the UCC, I am seen as a whole person (not solely as a lesbian). That's all I ever wanted: to be seen as a whole person. The UCC recognizes my gifts for ministry, and I am now serving as a Committee on Ministry chairperson. In light of all this, I am sending a stole which I have had since I was a seminarian. A stole which I wore for 13 1/2 years while a minister in the PC(USA). It has not gone with me into the UCC. It reminds me of the painful past, not the wonderful present and bright future. These stoles serve the dual purpose of showing support for LGBT persons, while also protecting their anonymity by including their names as "one among many".) The Shower of Stoles Project owes its very existence to St. Luke Presbyterian Church, a More Light congregation working for the full inclusion of LGBT persons into the full life and leadership of the church. St. Luke, founded in the 1960's, is situated in one of the wealthiest communities in Minnesota. Although architects presented various plans for opulent, multi-million dollar sanctuaries, St. Luke's first members chose instead to build a very simple, low maintenance, multi-use building that would allow them to commit more of their financial resources to social justice causes. (To this day, St. Luke's lack of air conditioning and rough gravel parking lot are a source of pride for their members.) This allowed them to institute a policy of "One-to-One Giving," mandating the church to give away one dollar for every dollar spent on themselves. Thus, when faced with the need to tear down and rebuild their education wing last year, the budget for their capital fund drive was set for double the amount needed for construction, and plans were made to give away the additional hundreds of thousands of dollars to affordable housing, peacemaking and human rights causes locally and throughout the world. It was this visionary financial commitment, coupled with a desire to fund new projects not supported by more traditional funding sources, that made it possible for my partner, Tammy, and I to turn a serendipitous event into an international project. By late 1996, my partner, Tammy and I had collected well over three hundred stoles -- kept in plastic trash bags and old suitcases -- and we were beginning to get requests for displays from dozens of churches. At the time we were not an incorporated project, had no legal status and no funding; Tammy and I paid for these first displays out of our own pockets. Since we had both returned to school, however, and had very meager income from part-time jobs, we soon hit the financial wall. Two churches, St. Luke and First United Church of Oak Park, IL, sensed the importance of what we had in our hands and decided to take a chance. Both churches wrote us a check for a few thousand dollars with instructions to get the stoles out of trash bags and find a way to share them with the world. The end result, we believe, is far greater than any of us could possibly have imagined. This signature stole was given to us on New Year's Day 1997, when Tammy and I traveled to Minnesota to thank St. Luke for its gift, and to share a display of the stoles with the congregation. Over the years, St. Luke has remained the single largest benefactor of the Shower of Stoles Project. In 2002 two St. Luke members, Beth Chaplin and TJ Worrell, donated their professional services to create the acclaimed video, "So Great a Cloud of Witnesses: The Story of the Shower of Stoles Project." It is safe to say that thousands of LGBT people of faith around the world, long silenced by their faith communities, now know that their stories will be given voice thanks to this one remarkable congregation. Stole Text ANONYMOUS Ohio I grew up as a child of the Presbyterian Church and entered adulthood secure in its bounds. In my middle years I felt keenly the call to ministry. But since my late teens I had known clearly - though had not chosen to live - my lesbian orientation and identity, and by the time I felt the sense of call the church had taken official action that would prevent my ordination as Minister of Word and Sacrament. Thus, although I longed to attend seminary and seriously considered enrolling, I finally concluded that I would have to find other ways to respond to God's call. Today, I serve the congregation of which I am a member as I am able and in silence. My professional work is with young adults, many of whom are openly struggling on their faith journeys, engaging in questions of identity and vocation, squaring off against the constraints our church imposes on them. I believe that by listening to these young persons, by hearing them into speech, I am in some way, if only partially, fulfilling my call. Kimberli Morris Stole Text Kimberli Morris Presbyterian Church Member Baltimore, MD (First panel) I grew up in a fundamentalist denomination where I was raised to believe that I was inferior merely for being a female, forget what it would mean if they found out I was gay. Any talents or skills that God had given me were irrelevant and secondary to the fact that I was a lesbian. Through college and beyond I started to realize that this did not represent God. Finally, many years later, I have found a congregation where all people are welcome, no exceptions, no distinctions. The denomination, however, still wants to make distinctions, to keep gay people from serving and leading regardless of any talents and skills that God has given them. I hope that this denomination chooses to represent God more accurately, and stops putting bushels over any of the lights that God has created. This is the first signature stole to become a part of the Shower of Stoles collection. A gift from my parents, and made by my good friend Cynthia Ogletree, the first signatures were allies from Heartland Presbytery who were present on Sept. 16, 1995, when I set aside my ordination. More signatures were added a few weeks later when the governing boards of Presbyterians for Lesbian and Gay Concerns (PLGC) and the More Light Churches Network (MLCN) came to Kansas City for a joint meeting. A few additional signatures were added at the MLCN national conference in early 1996, but new signature stoles were already in the making by the time of this conference. Cynthia Ogletree made the pattern for this stole by reproducing the construction of what is believed to be the oldest stole in the collection, one given by David Hostetter in honor of his daughter (#40). Columbia, MD owes much of its heritage to James Rouse, a mortgage banker, developer and most important a visionary who, in the 1960's was the driving force behind the creation of this planned community. At a time when the ecumenical movement was flourishing, Rouse's own commitment to inclusiveness was realized in the creation of the Columbia Interfaith Centers where "the bold, new idea of different religious expressions working together where possible and having independent integrity when needed began... Thus, from early on, Jews, Protestants, and Roman Catholics planned to live together in creative tension to maximize their respective and collective interests." The Shower of Stoles Project owes its very existence to First United Church of Oak Park, a More Light and Open and Affirming congregation working for the full inclusion of LGBT persons into the full life and leadership of the church. First United Church of Oak Park was formed in 1975 by the merger of First Presbyterian Church of Oak Park and First Congregational Church of Oak Park. Both congregations can trace their roots back to the same church, Oak Ridge Church of Harlem. Oak Ridge Church, which met in a small, wood-framed schoolhouse, counted among its thirteen founding members Mr. and Mrs. Anson Hemingway, grandparents of author Ernest Hemingway. The merger between these two churches was a unique and remarkable event. While most mergers take place between small, dying congregations, these two churches were both strong, healthy, fiscally sound churches when they decided to make this unprecedented move. Both congregations had long histories of work on the forefront of social justice causes. Looking for more opportunities for cooperative work between them, they concluded that by merging and selling off one of their two large physical plants they could use their common resources more effectively and put far more money towards mission giving. The result was the creation of a million dollar Special Mission Endowment Fund which has supported advocacy and justice efforts locally and across the globe. By late 1996, my partner, Tammy and I had collected well over three hundred stoles -- kept in plastic trash bags and old suitcases -- and were beginning to get requests for small displays from dozens of churches. At the time we were not incorporated "project" and had no funding; Tammy and I paid for these first displays out of our own pockets. Since we had both returned to school, however, and had very meager income from part-time jobs, we soon hit the financial wall. Two churches, FUOP and St. Luke Presbyterian Church of Wayzata, MN, sensed the importance of what we had in our hands and decided to take a chance. Both churches wrote us a check for a few thousand dollars with instructions to get the stoles out of trash bags and find a way to share them with the world. The end result of their generosity, we believe, is far greater than any of us could possibly have imagined. Anonymous (First Evangelical Covenant stole) Stole Text ANONYMOUS EVANGELICAL COVENANT CHURCH At the 1996 Annual Meeting of the Evangelical Covenant Church, the denominational delegates passed a resolution on human sexuality that states, A publicly declared, legally binding marriage between one woman and one man is the one appropriate place for sexual intercourse. Heterosexual marriage, faithfulness within marriage, abstinence outside of marriage these constitute the Christian standard. The vote passing this resolution was followed by a congregational hymn, the words of which (printed on this stole) continue to be ironic in light of the denominations exclusion from membership and ministry those who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender. This stole is in recognition of those LGBT pastors, ministers of music, directors of Christian education, seminarians, youth ministers, and educators in the Covenant denomination whose Christian witness has been denied or forced into silence due to sexual orientation or gender identification. Jennifer L. Walters Stole Text JENNIFER L. WALTERS EPISCOPAL I was raised Roman Catholic and felt called to the priesthood since I was a child. I had always thought that it was my religious nature that made me feel so different from other kids. Then, in college when I began to realize that I was lesbian AND Christian, my difference and sense of isolation became even more profound, though I felt embraced by God throughout. In 1992 I was the first openly lesbian candidate for ordination in the Episcopal Diocese of Michigan. I had received threats and at our church convention opponents called me the anti-Christ. The bishop who ordained me in 1994 was charged with heresy. My community made this stole and gave it to me to wear on my ordination day. I give thanks for the love and support of my church community, and family. It is only by the grace of God that I continue to serve as a priest in the church. Don Streeter Stole Text Don Streeter Community of Christ Salem, Oregon I knew that I viewed boys and girls differently from the time puberty struck but didn't realize that what I felt was defined as homosexuality. I had always promised God, myself, and my wife that I would be faithful to our marriage covenant and I am proud that I did, even though my head would often turn at the sight of other men. Shortly after our divorce, my inner being begged to be recognized and dealt with. I found a support group and upon my first visit was able to come to grips with my sexuality and came to embrace it as part of who I was instead of enduring the self-loathing and contempt that I had experienced before. For the first time in my life I was able to look in the mirror and love the person I saw instead of seeing him with disgust and derision. I was called to the office of Teacher in 1971 and several years later to Priest. I loved those offices dearly! When I came out in November 1993, I naively expected the support of my church family (not the congregation I attend now) but instead found myself very much alone. My pastor and district president were unsupportive and seemed more concerned with expediency than honor. I was silenced on the grounds that I had "disrupted a worship service" (I read a coming out statement during a 9:45 a.m. early morning worship) and for "betraying the trust of the congregation." My lines of appeal were not available as the district president had already supported the pastor, our regional administrator was dealing with his own divorce proceedings, and an apostle had not yet been reassigned to our area. I gave up hope. Denomination Community of Christ (formerly RLDS) Contribution Date 2002 Contribution Story Don Streeter's stole is quite the fabulous creation. Made of wildly colored bunched fabric with paper flowers and strings of colored beads, it was once voted the "gayest stole in the collection" by a small group of LGBT United Methodists. But this bright, festive stole holds an immensely painful story. Don served his church well and loved that work with all his heart. He expected his church to return this love when he came out. Instead he was "silenced," a ritual in Latter Day Saint traditions (no longer practiced in the Community of Christ) which effectively isolates a member from family, friends and church, while cutting off the member's ability to speak on their own behalf. In a tradition that places a high value on family and community, the impact of silencing on LGBT folk like Don is devastating. There is no "good news" at the end of this story. Don ends it simply, "I gave up hope."
