Description An account of the resource A just married Rupert Raj-Gauthier attends the 11th (his first) International Symposium on Gender Dysphoria sponsored by the Harry Benjamin International Gender Dysphoria Association lHBIGDA). It was held at the Stouffer Tower Hotel in Cleveland, Ohio, from September 20-23. He drove there from Toronto with his new wife, Michelle. Rupert offered an extensive report on persons and topics with lots of detail. However, most significant for the present work is the information he learned about the emotional issues that arise for transitioning trans people. At the time, he was excited to learn more about FTMs who identified as gay, a topic he says was "practically unknown." He also heard a paper by Dr. Ira Pauly (a Reno psychiatrist) who "introduced" the existence of the "female-to-gay male'' and showed a videotaped interview he conducted with Lou Sullivan (a gay F-M man). The most poignant paper, by far, was Dr. Leah Schaefer's and Dr. Connie Wheeler's crucial look at guilt as a significant motivating factor in the gender-dysphoric person and the vital importance of slowing down the transitioning process so that the devastating effects of guilt on self-concept can be effectively understood and managed. These New York psychotherapists also touched on the possible guilt felt by the helping professional. Rupert continued to report how his wife announced at the conference that he and she "were there not as consumers, but as providers - to help fill the gap left by health care professionals." Before attending the symposium, Rupert proposed presenting a paper entitled "Some Sociological Variables Affecting the Differential Therapeutic, Counseling and Peer-Support Needs of Female and Male Transsexuals." However, it was turned down by Dr. Billowitz (the Program Committee Chairman, because "... it has been the policy that formal presentations at the meeting be given only by professionals with formal training." Description An account of the resource The video features, among others, Rupert Raj with his sister Amala. They and other families discuss the coming out of family members. While these families experienced minimal trauma (in the form of parents and siblings choosing to accept and adjust), some commentators note that coming out can present a spiritual crisis for all when the family is unwilling to allow a flexible adjustment. Strict religious beliefs and social mores often dictate this rigidity. This is why a person coming out can feel great shame and believe there will be no acceptance of their gender or sexual identity. Even when the child is a cisgender gay or lesbian, they still may commit suicide upon seeing no acceptance of who they are. The video notes that suicide can be a way of not having to confess to the family that one is queer. It was not yet known when this early film was made that the rate of suicide attempts is highest for trans people. The risk rises even higher when the trans person feels compelled to change or modify their biological sex to align with their felt gender, as Rupert Raj did. The video makes the point that in South Asian societies coming out places one immediately at odds with culture and religion which are obstacles the survivors and their relations must navigate. As a result of the stresses generated, some who come out abandon religion altogether, and others seek to find space within their faith or create new forms of faith more suitable to them. Nádleehi, meaning "one-who-has-been-changed"). According to Wikipedia, the Nádleehi are a third gender recognized by the Navajo people who embody traditionally male and female roles. Description An account of the resource The male role of Hastiin Tłʼa was that of the medicine man. Their female role was that of a weaver. This artist, Hastiin Tłʼa, broke tradition when capturing the patterns used in their elusive impermanent sandpaintings in the relative stability or permanence provided by the medium of woven textiles. Yet, it was an act of cultural conservation when Hastiin Tłʼa sought to preserve the Navajo religion by helping a Boston heiress (his friend Mary Cabot Wheelwright) establish the Wheelwright Museum of the American Indian in Santa Fe, New Mexico. That institution later was renamed the Navajo Museum of Ceremonial Art when it repatriated sacred materials and remains back to the care of the Navajo people.
