The opening page of their website contains a description of themselves a progressive church welcoming of people from all walks of life, followed immediately by part of D. Martin Luther King's 1964 Nobel Prize acceptance speech. Their mission statement of this group of active servants declares that, "No issue is beyond the pale of our discussion and action." Good Samaritan is a "More Light" and "Open and Affirming" congregation, working for the full inclusion of LGBT persons into the life and leadership of the church. I was told that it was from a student, but we have no other information about this individual. The College of Wooster was founded by Presbyterians, and although it it now fully independent the college maintains close ties to the denomination. Wooster boasts a long commitment to progressive values; the first PhD in the college's history was awarded to a woman, Annie Irish, in 1882. The college admitted its first Black students in the 1880's and has always maintained an internationally diverse student body. This stole was one of the original 80 stoles that were on display on Sept. 16, 1995 when I set aside my ordination before Heartland Presbytery (see stole #1 for details). The first five are identical designs with a name and personal symbol added to each. Carrie, a biochemist, added DNA strand as one of her symbols. Third Church prides itself on having been in the vanguard of movement and change throughout its history. In 1953, Lilian Alexander brought to the session of Third Church a proposal to ordain women as clergy in the Presbyterian Church. Her overture passed through the session to the local presbytery and on to the General Assembly, where it was adopted, opening the way for the first woman, Margaret Towner, to be ordained in 1956. Third has a long history of peace and justice activism throughout the world. They are a More Light congregation, working for the full inclusion of LGBT persons in the life and leadership of the church. Most of the Signature Stoles in the collection are from local congregations, and were created through a process that included official recognition by a council or board, the involvement of the whole congregation, and often a formal dedication before being sent to the Shower of Stoles. Others, including this one from Stone Church, had a more spontaneous history. From what I understand, just a few months after we began receiving stoles, a woman from Stone Church heard that LGBT Presbyterians were making stoles and sending them to us as a way to tell their stories. They also heard that a few congregations with LGBT members were making stoles and signing them in support of those members. That woman told another woman, who told a couple of others, and they decided to do something to honor the LGBT folk that they knew. Knowing they would find other kindred souls at an upcoming women's retreat, one of them whipped up a simple blue cotton stole, adorned it with a rainbow colored ribbon, and took it to the retreat where everyone signed it. It was then put in an envelope, with a wonderful note of encouragement and hope from the women, and sent off to us. Simple stoles like these are some of my favorite ones. There is no question that they are a gift from the hearts of true allies. Raymond Stole Text Hope Raymond (Japanese characters) Denomination Presbyterian Church (USA) Contribution Date 1996 Contribution Story This is one of about thirty stoles donated by First Presbyterian of Palo Alto. First Palo Alto, a More Light congregation, has for decades been on the forefront of the movement for full inclusion of LGBT persons into the life and leadership of the church and greater society. Among the many leaders of the movement who have come from this congregation is Mitzi Henderson, former national President of PFLAG and national Co-Moderator of More Light Presbyterians. The Japanese characters are a rough translation of the English words HOPE - RAYMOND. It is one of about a dozen stoles in the collection that include Japanese, Chinese or Korean characters. In 1998 I brought a display of stoles to a conference of LGBT seminarians being held at Chicago Theological Seminary. The stoles were hung along a cloister walkway at the front of the building; this stole was near the entrance. At one point a young Japanese man came through the entrance, saw this stole, and burst into tears. I found out later that he was converted by Nazarene missionaries in Japan, and that they had arranged for him to attend a Nazarene college and seminary. While in the U.S. he began to accept his sexuality, but when he began mentioning to others that he was gay, he was dropped immediately from the seminary. With limited English, and his entire support system in this country now gone, he was trying to start over as as student at CTS, an LGBT-supportive seminary affiliated with the United Church of Christ. All this I would hear later. At the time, he simply touched the stole and said, "Thank God, I am not alone!" But some of the simplest stoles tell the most powerful stories. When Ivan Perez came out as a gay man, he was forced to leave behind not only his church but also his country. He arrived in the U.S. with almost no possessions. His stole is made out of an old pair of pants. Ivan graduated from the Seminario Evangelico de Teologia in Matanzas, Cuba. He was ordained in the Presbyterian Reformed Church of Cuba and accepted a call to a church. Suddenly aware of the painful double life he was forced to lead and the toll this would take on his ability to serve his congregation, he resigned a year later. To make ends meet he began working as a freelance translator, but continued to search for some way to follow his call. Through his work as a translator he happened to meet Rev. Alison Boden, Dean of Rockefeller Chapel at the University of Chicago, who was leading a group of divinity students on a tour of Cuban religious sites. Through the efforts of Boden and others at the University of Chicago, Ivan was offered a full scholarship at the Divinity School. With only $1,200 in savings, however, he was well short of the $10,000 needed for immigration. The Divinity School contributed a $3,000 stipend, and then he contacted friends he knew in the Presbyterian Church (USA). Then, in what Ivan describes as a "miracle," word spread across the country and around the world, particularly through the Presbyterian Cuba Connection, and another $6,000 was raised, giving him just enough to get to the U.S. He arrived in Chicago on Jan. 1, 1998, to a double dose of culture shock: full-time English immersion, and Chicago's bitterly cold winter. Through the Hyde Park Cluster of Theological Schools, a consortium of seminaries on Chicago's south side, Ivan quickly made many friends. Shortly after his arrival in the U.S., three students at McCormick Theological Seminary told Ivan about the anticipated arrival of a display of the Shower of Stoles, and offered to help him make one to add to the collection. On the morning I arrived, two of the students met me at the door with four stoles, telling me proudly that they had worked all night, finishing them around dawn. The four stoles had been made out of an old pair of light gray jeans, with bits of ribbon added for color. One is Ivan's stole; the others honor two anonymous students and an anonymous educator. All four, along with several others, were dedicated at a worship service in McCormick's chapel, with Ivan in attendance. An extraordinarily bright and articulate young man, Ivan said it was his hope that, after completing his Masters degree, he could stay on at the University of Chicago to earn a PhD. During this time Susan left the United Church and accepted a call to a congregation in the Metropolitan Community Churches. Denomination United Church of Canada Metropolitan Community Church Contribution Date 2000 Contribution Story It is a rare thing for a church to say, "We were wrong." It is rarer, still for a church body to repent for having acted unjustly, and to offer a public apology to one who was wronged. But such were the circumstances surrounding the dedication of this stole in honor of Rev. Susan Louise Mabey. As the story on this stole indicates, Susan Mabey's quest for, and subsequent denial of, ordination in the United Church of Canada set off a firestorm within the denomination. The ensuing debate ended seven years later when, in 1988, LGBT persons were accorded the right to be ordained in the United Church. By then, however, Susan had left, accepting a call to Metropolitan Community Church of Toronto (the largest MCC congregation in the world) and returning to the University of Toronto to earn her PhD. In 1998, the Toronto Conference chose to mark the tenth anniversary of the ordination of LGBT persons by inviting Susan back and acknowledging her enormous personal sacrifice that made this occasion possible. This stole was prepared by an active LGBT lay leader in the conference, and was dedicated at a service of worship honoring Susan. She said, understandably, that she had very mixed feelings about returning to the Toronto Conference, and that she debated whether she would accept the invitation or not. In the end, however, she was glad that she had made the decision to come; it offered some closure on an immensely painful chapter in her life. It is fitting that, at the service of ordination for new ministers in the conference, one of the ordinands was a young gay man from the United States who had emigrated to Canada from the U.S. to be with his Canadian partner. This was the first display of the stoles in Canada -- and the first in a hockey rink. The Conference delegates were seated on the covered floor of Dundalk's municipal rink. 200 stoles were arranged on coat hangers along the glass wall surrounding the rink, creating a striking backdrop to the plenary. Sylvia Dunstan, to whom this stole is dedicated, was a minister, prison chaplain and prolific hymnodist in the United Church of Canada. Every church I have served in Connecticut, North Carolina, and Texas has grown. My singleness made the members of my churches wonder, but they never knew I was gay. I was afraid to come out. Twice I was targeted with suspicion. Graffiti was written on my house. My car tires were slashed. An anonymous letter was circulated once, alleging terrible things. In an attempt to drive me away, my pet Basset hound, Beau, and my English bulldog, Buck, were butchered and hung up in the back yard of my parsonage. There was a lot of fear in my life. By grace, I didn't buckle and run. The closet never protected me, though I once thought it did. My dearest friend in ministry advised me, "If there are no secrets, Steve, there can be no ambushes." Finally, I was ready. I came out. Fully. It was the best thing I ever did. Though I regret my silence, and acknowledge that I left every major prejudice pretty much intact in the churches I served, I rejoice in the voice I have now. I teach in seminary, I preach and administer the sacraments in a whole new way. The old fears die hard. But as I exercise my full power as a gay man and a Christian, it becomes less and less important that I may be afraid. I hope I can speak for myself and others for a long time. I have never been defrocked. I am grateful to stand with my sisters and brothers who have been. Grace abounds. He was ordained in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), but he is now a minister in the Alliance of Baptists. Steve's stole is one of six that I took with me everywhere I went. While the main focus of denominational debate in recent years has centered on around LGBT ordination, none of the stories on these six stoles is concerned primarily with ordination. Instead, each speaks to the church's complicity in the spiritual and physical violence aimed at LGBT people. In many ways the church has avoided this complicity by sanitizing the debate and reducing our lives to an "issue" -- the issue of ordination, or the issue of marriage equality. Doing so has allowed the church to keep the focus of its debate in-house and, more important, to cast LGBT persons as the "problem," rather than the church's own homophobia. I read Steve's stole to virtually every church I visited. Generally, I did so without introduction -- this shocking story speaks for itself. The power of the story is redoubled by the fact that it is told without anger or bitterness, and that it ends with a seemingly impossible declaration of faith: "Grace abounds." The only thing I would ever add to the reading of the story was to mention that Steve had added a line of small brass bells at the bottom of the stole, so he would "never be silenced again." Without comment, this story would blow the lid off a congregation's polite debate and force people to look squarely into the face of spiritual violence against LGBT people. It was one of the most effective stories in the entire collection for moving congregations from debate to constructive action. I have read this story hundreds and hundreds of times, to groups all over North America. Its powerful effect on me has never lessened, and never will. Although this young man was not "out" to anyone outside the group, he had been mercilessly abused by his family and his church on the mere suspicion that he was gay, and he feared for his life. Almost all of the other students are "out," but instead of simply trying to push their friend out of the closet, out of his church or away from his family, they chose instead to "sit with him," to be patient, offer their friendship and support, share in Bible study, and provide a listening ear until the young man's fears subsided and he could "find his own way." These stoles were given to me when I directed a display of stoles at the Tang Museum on the campus of Skidmore College in 2001. One of the ELCA students drove to Saratoga Springs, NY to deliver the stoles and tell me their story. As an act of solidarity with their one friend, all eighteen chose to put only their first names on the stoles. The student who delivered the stoles talked with me for quite awhile, but he, too, chose to tell me only his first name and he left no contact information. Although I don't know these students beyond the bit that they chose to share with me, I am touched by their story and impressed with the bond of faith and friendship they have formed. When I asked how their friend was doing, the student smiled and said, "He's getting his spiritual life back." And, he added, "He has changed our lives, too."
