Elders and Deacons Stole Text ELDERS AND DEACONS THIRD CHURCH ROCHESTER NY Denomination Presbyterian Church (USA) Contribution Date 1996 Contribution Story We received about a dozen stoles from members of Third Church over the years. The first five are identical designs with a name and personal symbol added to each. This one honors a significant number of LGBT elders and deacons who have served Third Church in the past. Third Church prides itself on having been in the vanguard of movement and change throughout its history. In 1953, Lilian Alexander brought to the session of Third Church a proposal to ordain women as clergy in the Presbyterian Church. Her overture passed through the session to the local presbytery and on to the General Assembly, where it was adopted, opening the way for the first woman, Margaret Towner, to be ordained in 1956. Third has a long history of peace and justice activism throughout the world. They are a More Light congregation, working for the full inclusion of LGBT persons in the life and leadership of the church. Solidarity Stole (Lincoln Park Presbyterian) Stole Text (No narrative, signatures only) Denomination Presbyterian Church (USA) Contribution Date 1996 Contribution Story When one visits the "History" page on most church websites, one can expect to find a "bricks and mortar" chronology focusing on capital campaigns and buildings. Not so at Lincoln Park Presbyterian Church. A visit to their history page reveals a chronology of unparalleled social action. Founded in 1966 through a church merger, this new congregation on Chicago's north side hit the ground running. By 1968 they were deeply involved in anti-war activities and issues concerning civil rights, desegregation, farm workers, hunger and public education. Demonstrators at the Democratic National Convention were provided shelter at the church. And a full year before the Stonewall riot, LPPC was already organizing on behalf of gay and lesbian rights. All this activity certainly drew attention: in 1969 LPPC gained local notoriety when it was discovered that the Chicago Police had been illegally spying on the activities of the congregation and the building's other tenants. In 1972, the Session of the Lincoln Park Church issued a call to David Sindt, an openly gay pastor, to serve as part-time assistant pastor to establish a ministry with the gay community. This action was blocked by the Presbytery of Chicago, but LPPC continued its efforts: In 1974 David Sindt founded Presbyterians for Gay Concerns, now More Light Presbyterians. In 1976 LPPC co-founded the Chicago Night Ministry, a nationally recognized social service organization particularly involved with homeless and at-risk LGBTQ youth, and five years later LPPC became one of the first More Light congregations. Their successful defense of a church judicial case involving their reelection of an openly gay Elder ensured full membership rights for LGBT members of the Presbyterian Church nationwide. Countless LGBT Presbyterians have said over the years that we will never know the immense courage -- and the incredible faith -- it must have taken to raise that small sign. Eily Marlow Stole Text EILY MARLOW Associate Chaplain Macalester College Saint Paul, Minnesota Denomination Presbyterian Church (USA) Contribution Date 2004 Contribution Story In a denomination that has constitutionally banned the ordination of LGBT persons, Eily Marlow's own ordination was no small accomplishment. An "out" lesbian, Eily spent years sharing her faith journey and call to ministry with her home congregation and pastors, and with key members of Milwaukee Presbytery, until she was received by the presbytery as a Candidate for Ministry. She spent two more years methodically sharing her story and building support within the presbytery until finally, on Feb. 23, 2005, she was cleared for ordination. It was a remarkable achievement both for Eily and for Milwaukee Presbytery, which handled her candidacy and the ensuing debate over her fitness for ministry with grace and decorum, knowing that charges could be filed against them at any time for having taken this action. At a post-ordination reception at Macalester College in St. Paul, MN, where she had been serving as an Associate Chaplain throughout her long ordeal, Eily was celebrated for the personal effort that made this possible, and for the impact it would have across the denomination. Later, while talking with a few of her Presbyterian LGBT friends, Eily tearfully shared the mixed emotions she felt at her ordination: "I feel as though the presbytery finally was able to push me up and over the barbed wire fence. I got torn up and bloodied in the process, but I got to other side. The minute I landed there, though, I turned around and looked back through the fence and saw all of you there... I swear I will never forget the privilege of being on this side, and I'll keep working to tear that fence down!" The College of Wooster was founded by Presbyterians, and although it it now fully independent the college maintains close ties to the denomination. Wooster boasts a long commitment to progressive values; the first PhD in the college's history was awarded to a woman, Annie Irish, in 1882. The college admitted its first Black students in the 1880's and has always maintained an internationally diverse student body. The Shower of Stoles Project owes its very existence to First United Church of Oak Park, a More Light and Open and Affirming congregation working for the full inclusion of LGBT persons into the full life and leadership of the church. First United Church of Oak Park was formed in 1975 by the merger of First Presbyterian Church of Oak Park and First Congregational Church of Oak Park. Both congregations can trace their roots back to the same church, Oak Ridge Church of Harlem. Oak Ridge Church, which met in a small, wood-framed schoolhouse, counted among its thirteen founding members Mr. and Mrs. Anson Hemingway, grandparents of author Ernest Hemingway. The merger between these two churches was a unique and remarkable event. While most mergers take place between small, dying congregations, these two churches were both strong, healthy, fiscally sound churches when they decided to make this unprecedented move. Both congregations had long histories of work on the forefront of social justice causes. Looking for more opportunities for cooperative work between them, they concluded that by merging and selling off one of their two large physical plants they could use their common resources more effectively and put far more money towards mission giving. The result was the creation of a million dollar Special Mission Endowment Fund which has supported advocacy and justice efforts locally and across the globe. By late 1996, my partner, Tammy and I had collected well over three hundred stoles -- kept in plastic trash bags and old suitcases -- and were beginning to get requests for small displays from dozens of churches. At the time we were not incorporated "project" and had no funding; Tammy and I paid for these first displays out of our own pockets. Since we had both returned to school, however, and had very meager income from part-time jobs, we soon hit the financial wall. Two churches, FUOP and St. Luke Presbyterian Church of Wayzata, MN, sensed the importance of what we had in our hands and decided to take a chance. Both churches wrote us a check for a few thousand dollars with instructions to get the stoles out of trash bags and find a way to share them with the world. The end result of their generosity, we believe, is far greater than any of us could possibly have imagined. Church of the Covenant, a federated United Church of Christ and Presbyterian Church, is steeped in history. Located just off the Boston Commons, the Gothic revival building erected in the mid-1800's was one of the first churches built in the Back Bay area. In the 1890's the sanctuary was completely redecorated by Tiffany Glass and Decorating Co., including the creation of an extraordinary set of Tiffany stained-glass windows and a chandelier that is said to be the first electrified light installed in a public building by Thomas Edison. Covenant's history of social justice and human rights work is equally rich. When I visited Covenant, I was intrigued to learn that the church was a designated stop along the "Boston Women's Heritage Trail." One of Covenant's members, Abbie Child, was the head of the Women's Board of Missions of the Congregational Church in the late 1800's. Another member, Dr. Elsa Meder, was one of the first women ordained as an elder in the Presbyterian Church. Elizabeth Rice and Alice Hageman, ordained in 1974 and 1975 respectively, were the first women to serve as pastors at a Back Bay church. When they were joined by Donna Day Lower, the church became the only one in the United States with three women clergy. Since opening the "Women's Lunch Place" in 1982, the church has served as a haven for poor women and their children. It is fitting, then, that one of the Tiffany windows is "Four Women of the Bible," including Miriam, Deborah, Mary of Bethany, and Dorcas. Covenant is both a More Light and Open and Affirming Congregation. Their strong and public advocacy on behalf of LGBT persons in the life and leadership of the church has drawn many LBGT persons to become a part of the church family. Their 52 stoles represent the largest subset of stoles given to the collection by any one congregation.
