Christopher Harris, M.D., Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at the Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt University, has been a pediatrician for twenty years. A gay African-American with a 3-year-old daughter, Harris was invited in 2005 to testify before a U.S. Senate subcommittee about the Federal Marriage Amendment and explain why denying same-sex couples the right to marry would negatively impact the health and security of their children. He is one of more than 750 pediatricians who organized to oppose the Federal Marriage Amendment. Dr. Harris is an ordained Presbyterian Elder and was active in the More Light movement in Cincinnati and Nashville. He helped create the More Light Task Force at Mt. Auburn Presbyterian Church in Cincinnati, a congregation which has been on the forefront of the Welcoming movement for many years. I told them no, for my small church does not have the funds to defend itself from the persecution that would come were they to ordain a gay man as an elder. It is, in fact, one of the very first stoles given to us. Jack and I were in attendance as observers at the General Assembly in the summer of 1995, just weeks before I was scheduled to meet before my presbytery to relinquish my ordination. When Jack heard this news, he went out and bought a plain white stole, hand-wrote this message on it, and gave it to me, telling me to take it with me to that meeting so I would know that I was not alone. If anyone would know the pain of one unable to follow their call, it would be Jack. Jack was called upon twice to serve his church as an ordained elder, a lay leader in a Presbyterian congregation. Both times he refused to accept that call, knowing that the costly litigation and upheaval that would surely follow that act of ordination would be far too much for his small congregation to bear. It was, therefore, an honor for me to have Jack's stole with me on that September day. Flanked by his and dozens of other stoles from friends and colleagues, I knew that I truly was surrounded by a faithful "cloud of witnesses." Over the years we were asked a number of times to change something written on a stole, ususally because someone who had been closeted was now out and wanted to add their name, or to amend a story. This particular stole saw three different manifestations. We first received it in 1995, identified only by the initials "E.B." About a year later, Erwin sent us a letter telling us that he had decided to leave his very successful youth ministry position at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Minneapolis. He and his partner were planning a commitment ceremony, and he no longer felt he could remain closeted. Although he felt this would be the end of his career in parish ministry, he wasn't sure what would come next, so he asked that we add his new story anonymously. About a year later, though, Erwin finally was ready to add the third and most important piece to his stole -- his full name. Erwin was President of the founding Board of the Shower of Stoles Project before returning to graduate school to pursue a PhD in ethics. He is now living in California. Following the loss of her ordination, Diana left the Presbyterian Church and entered the wilderness. She and her partner, Leslie Chartier, found their way to Madison, WI and to James Reeb Unitarian Universalist Congregation, a community full of people like Diana and Leslie who had left a wide variety of faith traditions in search of a place of welcome. Out of the Silence Cast Members Stole Text This stole has been signed by the members of the ensemble who present "Out of the Silence," a collage of stories by and about lesbian, gay, and bisexual Presbyterians. The members of the ensemble are gay and straight, from six Presbyterian churches, and range in age from 8 to 80. Among the lesbian, gay, and bisexual members, four are elders, three attend a Presbyterian seminary, and three are candidates for the ministry. Together we long for the day when we can all serve our church openly and fully. They are the church's brightest and best -- ordained elders, seminarians, candidates for ministry and other active leaders -- who are lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender. Determined to find a way to change minds and hearts in the Presbyterian Church, they created a theatrical presentation based on their own stories, and took it on the road. Eleven years later, little has changed in the Presbyterian denomination. Most of the seminarians and candidates in the cast still work for justice while waiting for the day when they can be ordained and bring their abundance of gifts to the Presbyterian ministry. Anonymous Student (College of Wooster; "THE CHURCH DOES NOT WANT ME") Stole Text THE CHURCH DOES NOT WANT ME Anonymous Michigan I am a Presbyterian college student. I was one of the most active youth in my church; even with 1,300 members, everyone, including the pastors, knew me. When I announced to my family and youth pastor at age 15 that I wanted to be a minister, I was received with congratulations and words of support. At the time, I did not know that the PC(USA) was involved in institutional prejudice. Now that I am aware, I unfortunately will never be ordained. I am bisexual and I will not serve in silence. I can not, in good conscience, lie to my church about who I am, nor do I believe it should be necessary. It is for this last reason that I have remained a member of the PC(USA): I have a responsibility to work for change.
