But some of the simplest stoles tell the most powerful stories. When Ivan Perez came out as a gay man, he was forced to leave behind not only his church but also his country. He arrived in the U.S. with almost no possessions. His stole is made out of an old pair of pants. Ivan graduated from the Seminario Evangelico de Teologia in Matanzas, Cuba. He was ordained in the Presbyterian Reformed Church of Cuba and accepted a call to a church. Suddenly aware of the painful double life he was forced to lead and the toll this would take on his ability to serve his congregation, he resigned a year later. To make ends meet he began working as a freelance translator, but continued to search for some way to follow his call. Through his work as a translator he happened to meet Rev. Alison Boden, Dean of Rockefeller Chapel at the University of Chicago, who was leading a group of divinity students on a tour of Cuban religious sites. Through the efforts of Boden and others at the University of Chicago, Ivan was offered a full scholarship at the Divinity School. With only $1,200 in savings, however, he was well short of the $10,000 needed for immigration. The Divinity School contributed a $3,000 stipend, and then he contacted friends he knew in the Presbyterian Church (USA). Then, in what Ivan describes as a "miracle," word spread across the country and around the world, particularly through the Presbyterian Cuba Connection, and another $6,000 was raised, giving him just enough to get to the U.S. He arrived in Chicago on Jan. 1, 1998, to a double dose of culture shock: full-time English immersion, and Chicago's bitterly cold winter. Through the Hyde Park Cluster of Theological Schools, a consortium of seminaries on Chicago's south side, Ivan quickly made many friends. Shortly after his arrival in the U.S., three students at McCormick Theological Seminary told Ivan about the anticipated arrival of a display of the Shower of Stoles, and offered to help him make one to add to the collection. On the morning I arrived, two of the students met me at the door with four stoles, telling me proudly that they had worked all night, finishing them around dawn. The four stoles had been made out of an old pair of light gray jeans, with bits of ribbon added for color. One is Ivan's stole; the others honor two anonymous students and an anonymous educator. All four, along with several others, were dedicated at a worship service in McCormick's chapel, with Ivan in attendance. An extraordinarily bright and articulate young man, Ivan said it was his hope that, after completing his Masters degree, he could stay on at the University of Chicago to earn a PhD. Although he did not know what doors might still be open for him after that, he still hoped that one day he might be able to return to Cuba to teach in a theological institution there. But their issues too often were lost or minimized as the implications of difference compelled solidarity through coalition rather than through integration. As J Mase III observes, "I believed in this very romantic myth of a cohesive LGBTQ community. … What I discovered was that the reality of being a trans person of color is often talked about within the LGBTQ community, but not actually addressed." To circumvent this racial exclusion and silencing of the black trans voice, J Mase III and his colleague, Lady Dane Figueroa, initiated the #TransphobiaIsASin campaign on social media. They sought to highlight religious-based violence and spiritual abuse. As co-editors of the "Black Trans Prayer Book," they strove to inspire people within and outside of spiritual communities to address this violence. The protest ritual they conducted on social media drew participants from over six countries on three continents who shared their photos to embrace any one of the four propositions that this team proposed to disrupt conventional religious thinking: 1. Transphobia Is a Sin; 2. Transphobia is Haram (Arabic word for sin); 3. Trans People are Divine 4. Trans People Exist Because Our Ancestors Existed. Their team regards such action as but a small part of the comprehensive project that is needed to decolonize faith practices. Hence, they encourage people of various faith traditions or backgrounds to secure BIPOC Trans folks' rights to heal in the context of spiritual community. J. Thomas George Stole Text I knew I was different long ago, but I didn’t want to be gay. Following graduation from college, I had my first sexual experience with a man. It was wonderful, but filled with guilt. According to my Lutheran tradition, sex before marriage was a “sin,” but if you enjoyed it, it was a SIN! A clergy friend of my family had encouraged me to consider seminary after college, but I had resisted. However, the guilt from this first encounter was so great, I made a bargain with God: if God would forgive me, I would go to seminary. The challenge of four years of seminary supported my denial. I got married determined to have a normal family life. I froze my emotions, except my sexual feelings, hoping to transfer them to my marriage relationship. A child born during my senior year locked the closet door. Denial prevailed. But soon marriage counseling began. I became a workaholic, trying to prove to myself through my career, hiding my orientation, avoiding a difficult marriage. I had frozen my emotions at age 25, and now at 46, I was seeking liberation. I began attending men’s conferences. I met people who accepted me and validated my feelings of grief and loss. I told my wife I was gay. Later I told our children of my struggle accepting being gay. We shared our decision to divorce and my decision to resign from the parish, as well as ministry. The painful process of grieving began in earnest. Today, I attend St. Paul-Reformation Lutheran Church, St. Paul, where my tradition offers me ritual and a caring community. It is in the openness of this congregation, gathered around the table, that I find my spiritual needs nurtured and the Gospel proclaimed that I am saved by grace through faith! Finally, I am accepted. I have a home. I continue to do ministry without my collar! Dedicated in a Service of Worship at McCormick Theological Seminary Chicago, Illinois January 14, 1998 Denomination Presbyterian Church (USA) Contribution Date 1998 Contribution Story In 1998, a small group of students at McCormick Seminary in Chicago helped make a stole for Ivan Perez, a Cuban exile who had been a pastor in the Presbyterian Reformed Church of Cuba before making his way to Chicago (read Ivan's story at stole #403). Ivan's stole and three others were made from an old pair of light gray pants. Ivan's stole was the only one that was named; the other three, including this one, are anonymous. "J.B." included a picture of himself on the stole, one which has him standing proudly atop a rocky ledge, but intentionally is too small for him to be identified.
