Sylvia Rivera was one of the earliest and most influential transgender rights activists to emerge in the wake of the Stonewall Inn uprising in 1969. She was close friends with Marsha P. Johnson, and spent almost her entire life fighting for civil rights reform, not only for gay and transgender people, but also for African Americans, and as part of the second-wave feminist movement.
