English ships, flying the red cross of St. George defeat the Spanish Armada in 1588 the Catholic King Phillip II launched into battle to unseat Elizabeth, a protestant Queen of England. He wanted to stop England from helping the Dutch to resist Spain's control of the Netherlands.
