Reconciling UM's are individuals who have added their names to a national list of those who support the Reconciling Ministries Network in their work towards the full inclusion of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people into the life and leadership of the United Methodist Church. (Note: A “signature stole” is one that is covered with the signatures of both gay and straight members of a congregation, denominational governing body, or other organization. These stoles serve the dual purpose of showing support for LGBT persons, while also protecting their anonymity by including their names as "one among many".) This stole was given to us in advance of the 2000 General Conference of the UnitedMethodistChurch in Cleveland, OH. In 1999, the Reconciling Ministries Network (RMN) inquired about the possibility of having a display of the Shower of Stoles at the General Conference the following April. At the time, there were only around twenty United Methodist stoles in the collection. We decided to introduce the Shower of Stoles to the Reconciling community by bringing the twenty UM stoles and about a hundred others to RMN’s Convocation in Denton, TX over the Labor Day weekend. Stoles started to trickle in during the fall, and by February they began coming in droves. In all, we received 220 United Methodist stoles – the vast majority of them arriving within eight weeks of the Conference. Thanks to a monumental effort by a number of volunteers who pitched in to help record, inventory, sew labels and make last-minute repairs, all of the new stoles were present in Cleveland. Twenty more people brought stoles directly to Cleveland, bringing the total number on display to 240. Towards the end of the General Conference, twenty eight lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender United Methodists and allies stood on the Conference floor in silent protest over the Conference’s failure to overturn the ban on LGBT ordination – a profound witness and act of defiance for which they were later arrested. As these twenty eight moved to the front of the room, another 200 supporters stood up around the balcony railing, each wearing one of the new United Methodist stoles. Hundreds more stood in solidarity as well, in the balcony and on the plenary floor, wearing symbolic “stoles” made from colorful bands of cloth. A group of young people from Minneapolis, members of a Communicant’s Class, had purchased bolts of cloth the preceding evening and stayed up all night cutting out close to a thousand of these “stoles.” In less than eight months, a handful of stoles had grown to become a powerful, visible witness to the steadfast faith of LGBT United Methodists nationwide. Columbia, MD owes much of its heritage to James Rouse, a mortgage banker, developer and most important a visionary who, in the 1960's was the driving force behind the creation of this planned community. At a time when the ecumenical movement was flourishing, Rouse's own commitment to inclusiveness was realized in the creation of the Columbia Interfaith Centers where "the bold, new idea of different religious expressions working together where possible and having independent integrity when needed began... Thus, from early on, Jews, Protestants, and Roman Catholics planned to live together in creative tension to maximize their respective and collective interests." (quote from the CIC website) Four Interfaith Centers, with a fifth being planned, provide facilities for eighteen widely diverse religious congregations. St. John United has been under the CIC umbrella since its founding in 1969. St. John United is a More Light and Open and Affirming congregation, committed to welcoming LGBT persons into the full life and leadership of the church. This is one of two signature stoles from St. John; this one is covered with signatures, the second is dedicated to those who are "serving in silence." These stoles were created for inclusion at the 1996 General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (USA), before the collection expanded into denominations outside the Presbyterian Church. Most of the Signature Stoles in the collection are from local congregations, and were created through a process that included official recognition by a council or board, the involvement of the whole congregation, and often a formal dedication before being sent to the Shower of Stoles. Others, including this one from Stone Church, had a more spontaneous history. From what I understand, just a few months after we began receiving stoles, a woman from Stone Church heard that LGBT Presbyterians were making stoles and sending them to us as a way to tell their stories. They also heard that a few congregations with LGBT members were making stoles and signing them in support of those members. That woman told another woman, who told a couple of others, and they decided to do something to honor the LGBT folk that they knew. Knowing they would find other kindred souls at an upcoming women's retreat, one of them whipped up a simple blue cotton stole, adorned it with a rainbow colored ribbon, and took it to the retreat where everyone signed it. It was then put in an envelope, with a wonderful note of encouragement and hope from the women, and sent off to us. Simple stoles like these are some of my favorite ones. There is no question that they are a gift from the hearts of true allies. Signature Stole (Wesley United Methodist Church, Fresno CA) Stole Text Allies and Supporters, Wesley UMC, Fresno, CA Denomination United Methodist Church Contribution Date 2000 Contribution Story This is one of six Signature Stoles given to us by Wesley UMC in advance of the 2000 General Conference of the United Methodist Church in Cleveland, OH. (Note: A “signature stole” is one that is covered with the signatures of both gay and straight members of a congregation, denominational governing body, or other organization. These stoles serve the dual purpose of showing support for LGBT persons, while also protecting their anonymity by including their names as "one among many".) In 1999, the Reconciling Ministries Network (RMN) inquired about the possibility of having a display of the Shower of Stoles at the General Conference the following April. At the time, there were only around twenty United Methodist stoles in the collection. We decided to introduce the Shower of Stoles to the Reconciling community by bringing the twenty UM stoles and about a hundred others to RMN’s Convocation in Denton, TX over the Labor Day weekend. Stoles started to trickle in during the fall, and by February they began coming in droves. In all, we received 220 United Methodist stoles – the vast majority of them arriving within eight weeks of the Conference. Thanks to a monumental effort by a number of volunteers who pitched in to help record, inventory, sew labels and make last-minute repairs, all of the new stoles were present in Cleveland. Twenty more people brought stoles directly to Cleveland, bringing the total number on display to 240. Towards the end of the General Conference, twenty eight lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender United Methodists and allies stood on the Conference floor in silent protest over the Conference’s failure to overturn the ban on LGBT ordination – a profound witness and act of defiance for which they were later arrested. As these twenty eight moved to the front of the room, another 200 supporters stood up around the balcony railing, each wearing one of the new United Methodist stoles. Hundreds more stood in solidarity as well, in the balcony and on the plenary floor, wearing symbolic “stoles” made from colorful bands of cloth. A group of young people from Minneapolis, members of a Communicant’s Class, had purchased bolts of cloth the preceding evening and stayed up all night cutting out close to a thousand of these “stoles”. In less than eight months, a handful of stoles had grown to become a powerful, visible witness to the steadfast faith of LGBT United Methodists nationwide.
