              <text>&lt;p&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;This stole arrived with thirteen stoles given to us by Dumbarton UMC in advance of the 2000 General Conference of the United Methodist Church in Cleveland, OH.  Dumbarton is a Reconciling congregation, working for the full inclusion of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people into the life and leadership of the United Methodist Church.  In 1999, the Reconciling Ministries Network (RMN) inquired about the possibility of having a display of the Shower of Stoles at the General Conference the following April.  At the time, there were only around twenty United Methodist stoles in the collection.  We decided to introduce the Shower of Stoles to the Reconciling community by bringing the twenty UM stoles and about a hundred others to RMN’s Convocation in Denton, TX over the Labor Day weekend.  Stoles started to trickle in during the fall, and by February they began coming in droves.  In all, we received 220 United Methodist stoles – the vast majority of them arriving within eight weeks of the Conference.  Thanks to a monumental effort by a number of volunteers who pitched in to help record, inventory, sew labels and make last-minute repairs, all of the new stoles were present in Cleveland.  Twenty more people brought stoles directly to Cleveland, bringing the total number on display to 240.&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt; Towards the end of the General Conference, twenty eight lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender United Methodists and allies stood on the Conference floor in silent protest over the Conference’s failure to overturn the ban on LGBT ordination – a profound witness and act of defiance for which they were later arrested.  As these twenty eight moved to the front of the room, another 200 supporters stood up around the balcony railing, each wearing one of the new United Methodist stoles.  Hundreds more stood in solidarity as well, in the balcony and on the plenary floor, wearing symbolic “stoles” made from colorful bands of cloth.  A group of young people from Minneapolis, members of a Communicant’s Class, had purchased bolts of cloth the preceding evening and stayed up all night cutting out close to a thousand of these “stoles.”  In less than eight months, a handful of stoles had grown to become a powerful, visible witness to the steadfast faith of LGBT United Methodists nationwide.&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt; &lt;b&gt;Martha Juillerat&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;Founder, Shower of Stoles Project&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;2006&lt;/p&gt;</text>

&lt;p&gt;This is one of fifteen stoles from members, elders, deacons, and pastoral staff at West Hollywood Presbyterian Church (WHPC).&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;West Hollywood Presbyterian Church is a historical icon in the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community as well as the Welcoming Congregations movement.  WHPC was at the forefront of the civil rights movement in Los Angeles and in the early 1960's began to close each service by singing the civil rights anthem "We Shall Overcome" - a tradition that continues to this day.  As early as 1964 (five years before the Stonewall rebellion), West Hollywood Presbyterian Church hosted what is believed to be the first openly Gay Men's "Rap" Group in the city of Los Angeles and the church began to minister to the spiritual needs of the Gay &amp;amp; Lesbian community who had been drawn by its message of inclusiveness. Soon nationally known spiritual author Chris Glaser would launch "The Lazarus Project" at WHPC - A program to advocate for Gay &amp;amp; Lesbian spiritual and human rights.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;In October of 1984, WHPC called an openly gay man, the Reverend Dan Smith, to serve as its pastor. Dan continues to be the only minister in the country serving a Presbyterian congregation who went through the entire call and installation process as an "out" gay man.  While proudly continuing its tradition of progressive spirituality and activism, this multi-cultural congregation feeds approximately 4,000 hungry and homeless people each year, builds homes for economically-challenged families under the "Habitat for Humanity" program, offers an HIV Spiritual Support Group, provides a "Children's Church" program and continues to openly take stands on political issues involving civil rights. West Hollywood Presbyterian also claims to espouse a theology that is "perhaps the most pro-feminist in Los Angeles."&lt;/p&gt;

              <text>&lt;p&gt;The creator of this stole has been an ordained clergywoman in the UMC since 1975, serving churches for 18 years in the Oregon-Idaho Annual Conference before retooling for her current appointment as a Chaplain of Kalispell Regional Medical Center in Kalispell, Montana.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;In the winter of 200 she wrote to a few friends:  "From the very first days of my entrance into the Oregon-Idaho Annual Conference, in 1978, I have been blessed with mentors who were, for me personally, pastor in my own spiritual life.  Some were ordained, some were not.  Some of these persons have been gay and lesbian persons.  I have quietly supported those gay and lesbian mentors and advocated for change within the UMC.  As the UMC gathers in Cleveland, OH this May, I want to give witness to my belief that Christ welcomes us all to the Communion Table, and that God is inviting us in the UMC to do a new thing.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;There are many of us in the UMC who have felt our integrity compromised by the UM Book of Discipline's exclusive language stating, "Homosexuality is incompatible with Christian teaching."  It is my prayer that this year at General Conference there will be a change in that language and those whose ministry and membership we have denied will be invited home.  When that language is changed, it is also my prayer that those  more conservative folks at the Communion Table with us will not leave the UMC, but will stay at the table.&lt;/p&gt;</text>

              <text>&lt;p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0in 0in 0pt;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:10pt;font-family:Arial;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:10pt;font-family:Arial;"&gt;This stole was given to us in advance of the 2000 General Conference of the &lt;!--?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" /--&gt;UnitedMethodistChurch in Cleveland, OH.&lt;span&gt;  It was created by Brenda Willis and on behalf of a group of friends who wished to honor their lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender friends and colleagues in the Oregon-Idaho Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church.  &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;(Note: A “signature stole” is one that is covered with the signatures of both gay and straight members of a congregation, denominational governing body, or other organization.&lt;span&gt;  &lt;/span&gt;These stoles serve the dual purpose of showing support for LGBT persons, while also protecting their anonymity by including their names as "one among many".)&lt;!--?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /--&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0in 0in 0pt;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:10pt;font-family:Arial;"&gt;In 1999, the Reconciling Ministries Network (RMN) inquired about the possibility of having a display of the Shower of Stoles at the General Conference the following April.&lt;span&gt;  &lt;/span&gt;At the time, there were only around twenty United Methodist stoles in the collection.&lt;span&gt;  &lt;/span&gt;We decided to introduce the Shower of Stoles to the Reconciling community by bringing the twenty UM stoles and about a hundred others to RMN’s Convocation in Denton, TX over the Labor Day weekend.&lt;span&gt;  &lt;/span&gt;Stoles started to trickle in during the fall, and by February they began coming in droves.&lt;span&gt;  &lt;/span&gt;In all, we received 220 United Methodist stoles – the vast majority of them arriving within eight weeks of the Conference.&lt;span&gt;  &lt;/span&gt;Thanks to a monumental effort by a number of volunteers who pitched in to help record, inventory, sew labels and make last-minute repairs, all of the new stoles were present in Cleveland.&lt;span&gt;  &lt;/span&gt;Twenty more people brought stoles directly to Cleveland, bringing the total number on display to 240.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0in 0in 0pt;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:10pt;font-family:Arial;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0in 0in 0pt;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:10pt;font-family:Arial;"&gt;Towards the end of the General Conference, twenty eight lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender United Methodists and allies stood on the Conference floor in silent protest over the Conference’s failure to overturn the ban on LGBT ordination – a profound witness and act of defiance for which they were later arrested.&lt;span&gt;  &lt;/span&gt;As these twenty eight moved to the front of the room, another 200 supporters stood up around the balcony railing, each wearing one of the new United Methodist stoles.&lt;span&gt;  &lt;/span&gt;Hundreds more stood in solidarity as well, in the balcony and on the plenary floor, wearing symbolic “stoles” made from colorful bands of cloth.&lt;span&gt;  &lt;/span&gt;A group of young people from Minneapolis, members of a Communicant’s Class, had purchased bolts of cloth the preceding evening and stayed up all night cutting out close to a thousand of these “stoles.” &lt;span&gt; &lt;/span&gt;In less than eight months, a handful of stoles had grown to become a powerful, visible witness to the steadfast faith of LGBT United Methodists nationwide.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;This is one of 52 stoles donated to the Shower of Stoles collection by members and staff of Church of the Covenant.  Although each of the stoles is unique, all of them are tied together by the inclusion of a piece cloth from a common bolt of blue and ivory material somewhere in the stole.  Covenant is both a More Light and Open and Affirming Congregation.  Their strong and public advocacy on behalf of LGBT persons in the life and leadership of the church has drawn many LBGT persons to become a part of the Covenant church family.  Their 52 stoles represent the largest subset of stoles given to the collection by any one congregation.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Church of the Covenant, a federated United Church of Christ and Presbyterian Church, is steeped in history.  Located just off the Boston Commons, the Gothic revival building erected in the mid-1800's was one of the first churches built in the Back Bay area.  In the 1890's the sanctuary was completely redecorated by Tiffany Glass and Decorating Co., including the creation of an extraordinary set of Tiffany stained-glass windows and a chandelier that is said to be the first electrified light installed in a public building by Thomas Edison.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Covenant's history of social justice and human rights work is equally rich.  When I visited Covenant, I was intrigued to learn that the church was a designated stop along the "Boston Women's Heritage Trail."  One of Covenant's members, Abbie Child, was the head of the Women's Board of Missions of the Congregational Church in the late 1800's.  Another member, Dr. Elsa Meder, was one of the first women ordained as an elder in the Presbyterian Church.  Elizabeth Rice and Alice Hageman, ordained in 1974 and 1975 respectively, were the first women to serve as pastors at a Back Bay church.  When they were joined by Donna Day Lower, the church became the only one in the United States with three women clergy.  Since opening the "Women's Lunch Place" in 1982, the church has served as a haven for poor women and their children.  It is fitting, then, that one of the Tiffany windows is "Four Women of the Bible," including Miriam, Deborah, Mary of Bethany, and Dorcas.  Covenant remains on the forefront of work for equality and justice, and is active in the LGBT Welcoming movement in the Boston area and beyond.&lt;/p&gt;

                <text>Skyler Keiter-Massefski grew up in South Portland and is now minister of faith formation at the South Church in Amherst, Massachusetts.  On its website South Church Amherst describes itself as “an Open and Affirming, Immigrant Welcoming, [and] Green congregation of the United Church of Christ.  We strive to be a church where all can seek, pray, learn, and serve together.  Wherever you are on life’s journey, you are welcome here!”&#13;
This spring Skyler will be receiving their Master of Divinity degree from Yale Divinity School with concentrations in queer theology and theological anthropology.  After leading youth ministry and serving as a camp counselor during Maine summers, they now enjoy their current position because it allows them to work with people of all ages.  When not working or studying, Skyler enjoys hiking and skiing, bread baking, and playing board games.  They live in South Hadley with their partner, Shayn, along with their four-legged companions.   </text>

                <text>During Prohibition, “Harlem was the ‘in’ place to go for music and booze,” recalled the African American chanteuse Bricktop. “Every night the limousines pulled up to the corner,” and out spilled affluent whites, looking for a good time, great jazz, and the unmatchable thrill of doing something disreputable.&#13;

That is the indelible public image of slumming, but as Chad Heap reveals...slumming was far more widespread—and important—than such nostalgia-tinged recollections would lead us to believe. From its appearance as a “fashionable dissipation” centered on the immigrant and working-class districts of 1880s New York through its spread to Chicago and into the 1930s nightspots frequented by lesbians and gay men, Slumming charts the development of this popular pastime, demonstrating how its moralizing origins were soon outstripped by the artistic, racial, and sexual adventuring that typified Jazz-Age America. Vividly recreating the allure of storied neighborhoods such as Greenwich Village and Bronzeville, with their bohemian tearooms, rent parties, and “black and tan” cabarets, Heap plumbs the complicated mix of curiosity and desire that drew respectable white urbanites to venture into previously off-limits locales. And while he doesn’t ignore the role of exploitation and voyeurism in slumming—or the resistance it often provoked—he argues that the relatively uninhibited mingling it promoted across bounds of race and class helped to dramatically recast the racial and sexual landscape of burgeoning U.S. cities.</text>

&lt;p&gt;(Note: A solidarity stole is one that is covered with the signatures of both gay and straight members of a congregation, denominational governing body, or other organization.  These stoles serve the dual purpose of showing support for LGBT persons, while also protecting their anonymity by including their names as "one among many".)&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt; This is the first signature stole to become a part of the Shower of Stoles collection.  A gift from my parents, and made by my good friend Cynthia Ogletree, the first signatures were allies from Heartland Presbytery who were present on Sept. 16, 1995, when I set aside my ordination.  More signatures were added a few weeks later when the governing boards of Presbyterians for Lesbian and Gay Concerns (PLGC) and the More Light Churches Network (MLCN) came to Kansas City for a joint meeting.  A few additional signatures were added at the MLCN national conference in early 1996, but new signature stoles were already in the making by the time of this conference.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt; Cynthia Ogletree made the pattern for this stole by reproducing the construction of what is believed to be the oldest stole in the collection, one given by David Hostetter in honor of his daughter (#40).&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;The Shower of Stoles Project owes its very existence to St. Luke Presbyterian Church, a More Light congregation working for the full inclusion of LGBT persons into the full life and leadership of the church.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;St. Luke, founded in the 1960's, is situated in one of the wealthiest communities in Minnesota.  Although architects presented various plans for opulent, multi-million dollar sanctuaries, St. Luke's first members chose instead to build a very simple, low maintenance, multi-use building that would allow them to commit more of their financial resources to social justice causes.  (To this day, St. Luke's lack of air conditioning and rough gravel parking lot are a source of pride for their members.)  This allowed them to institute a policy of "One-to-One Giving," mandating the church to give away one dollar for every dollar spent on themselves.  Thus, when faced with the need to tear down and rebuild their education wing last year, the budget for their capital fund drive was set for double the amount needed for construction, and plans were made to give away the additional hundreds of thousands of dollars to affordable housing, peacemaking and human rights causes locally and throughout the world.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;It was this visionary financial commitment, coupled with a desire to fund new projects not supported by more traditional funding sources, that made it possible for my partner, Tammy, and I to turn a serendipitous event into an international project.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;By late 1996, my partner, Tammy and I had collected well over three hundred stoles -- kept in plastic trash bags and old suitcases -- and we were beginning to get requests for displays from dozens of churches.  At the time we were not an incorporated project, had no legal status and no funding; Tammy and I paid for these first displays out of our own pockets.  Since we had both returned to school, however, and had very meager income from part-time jobs, we soon hit the financial wall.  Two churches, St. Luke and First United Church of Oak Park, IL, sensed the importance of what we had in our hands and decided to take a chance.  Both churches wrote us a check for a few thousand dollars with instructions to get the stoles out of trash bags and find a way to share them with the world.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The end result, we believe, is far greater than any of us could possibly have imagined.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;This signature stole was given to us on New Year's Day 1997, when Tammy and I traveled to Minnesota to thank St. Luke for its gift, and to share a display of the stoles with the congregation.  Over the years, St. Luke has remained the single largest benefactor of the Shower of Stoles Project.  In 2002 two St. Luke members, Beth Chaplin and TJ Worrell, donated their professional services to create the acclaimed video, "So Great a Cloud of Witnesses: The Story of the Shower of Stoles Project."  It is safe to say that thousands of LGBT people of faith around the world, long silenced by their faith communities, now know that their stories will be given voice thanks to this one remarkable congregation.&lt;/p&gt;
