Solidarity Stole (Lincoln Park Presbyterian) Stole Text (No narrative, signatures only) Denomination Presbyterian Church (USA) Contribution Date 1996 Contribution Story When one visits the "History" page on most church websites, one can expect to find a "bricks and mortar" chronology focusing on capital campaigns and buildings. Not so at Lincoln Park Presbyterian Church. A visit to their history page reveals a chronology of unparalleled social action. Founded in 1966 through a church merger, this new congregation on Chicago's north side hit the ground running. By 1968 they were deeply involved in anti-war activities and issues concerning civil rights, desegregation, farm workers, hunger and public education. Demonstrators at the Democratic National Convention were provided shelter at the church. And a full year before the Stonewall riot, LPPC was already organizing on behalf of gay and lesbian rights. All this activity certainly drew attention: in 1969 LPPC gained local notoriety when it was discovered that the Chicago Police had been illegally spying on the activities of the congregation and the building's other tenants. In 1972, the Session of the Lincoln Park Church issued a call to David Sindt, an openly gay pastor, to serve as part-time assistant pastor to establish a ministry with the gay community. This action was blocked by the Presbytery of Chicago, but LPPC continued its efforts: In 1974 David Sindt founded Presbyterians for Gay Concerns, now More Light Presbyterians. In 1976 LPPC co-founded the Chicago Night Ministry, a nationally recognized social service organization particularly involved with homeless and at-risk LGBTQ youth, and five years later LPPC became one of the first More Light congregations. Their successful defense of a church judicial case involving their reelection of an openly gay Elder ensured full membership rights for LGBT members of the Presbyterian Church nationwide. Presbyterians for Lesbian and Gay Concerns (PLGC) was one of the predecessors to More Light Presbyterians, an organization working for the full inclusion of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people into the full life and leadership of the Presbyterian Church (USA). At one time PLGC held conferences in three regions: East, West and Midwest. Although enthusiasm for these conferences soon waned in the East and West, the Midwest Region continued to have conferences and retreats regularly until PLGC's merger with the More Light Churches Network (MLCN) in 1998. In a part of the country where LGBT Presbyterians often found themselves isolated and hundreds of miles away from a welcoming congregation, these retreats were a lifeline for LGBT folk and their families and friends. (One gay man from rural Iowa, who attended many retreats, was fond of saying that the Gay Pride Parade in his small town was "me walking down the middle of the street to the post office.") Over the years, the Midwest Regional Retreats became home to scores Presbyterian "exiles," and many shared that the retreats were the only point of contact of any kind that they had with the Presbyterian Church. A significant number of PLGC's early leaders were nurtured and developed through the Regional gatherings. Although the Midwest Retreats ended with the PLGC/MLCN merger, many still held fond memories of the support they received there. Responding to this continued interest, More Light Presbyterians has begun forming a new generation of regional gatherings, including leadership conferences and training events, many of them in the old Midwest Region. South Church, located just north of Manhattan and Yonkers, NY, has a long history of social justice activism locally and nationally, particularly on behalf of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people. Their public declarations stating their intention to ignore the Presbyterian Church's ban on LGBT ordination, along with pastor Joseph Gilmore's performance of same-sex marriages, drew fire from the denomination on many occasions. In 2005, South Church hosted the ordination of Ray Bagnuolo, and openly gay man, to the Presbyterian ministry. Reporting on this act of defiance, a newsletter for a far-right organization of Presbyterians stated: South Church is the unvanquished Alamo of homosexual activists and their allies in the PCUSA, having successfully fended off a number of attempts to require the session and the church's senior minister, Joseph Gilmore, to conform to Presbyterian polity. Given the source, South Church and Gilmore accepted their "Alamo" designation as a point of pride. A More Light congregation, South Church continues its work for the full inclusion of LGBT people into the life and leadership of the Presbyterian Church (USA). Solidarity Stole (St. James Lutheran Church) Stole Text In December of 1997, at our congregational meeting, St. James voted to become a Reconciling in Christ congregation. We framed that vote within the context of a broader welcoming statement that began, “St. James Lutheran Church holds ‘Welcoming’ in high esteem. The doors of our building and the hearts of our members are open to the wide variety of travelers which God might see fit to have pass our way. St. James is a welcoming congregation.” The statement went on from there to list the varieties of people we welcome. The list includes people of color, of diverse economic backgrounds, those whose background is not specifically Lutheran, and people with varying physical disabilities. This statement is part of the welcoming statement: “We welcome gay and lesbian members as a part of our congregation. To that end we say that gay and lesbian persons share with all others the worth that comes from being a unique individual created by God; that gay and lesbian people are welcome within the membership of this congregation upon making the same affirmation of faith that all other people make, and that as members of this congregation, gay and lesbian people are expected and encouraged to share in the sacramental and daily life of the congregation.” Pastor Jane Ralph’s resignation from her congregation, King of Glory, hit members of St. James hard because Pastor Ralph had served this congregation as an associate minister. The council wrote a letter of protest submitted to the Central States Synod Assembly as a resolution in June of 1998. Parishioners were invited to sign this stole in the weeks prior to the 1999 Central States Synod Assembly and it was displayed in a hospitality room there, as an unofficial part of the Assembly. We, at S. James, are proud to have the stole sent on to the Churchwide Assembly in Denver and again reaffirm our support for gay and lesbian clergy and the dignity of all homosexual persons. St. Lawrence University (Solidarity Stole) Stole Text St. Lawrence University Canton, NY In the winter of 2009, the Reverend Dr. Janie Spahr came to St. Lawrence University to give a lecture on the Shower of Stoles, speak in classes, and meet with LGBT student groups. At that time, we displayed 450 stoles from the collection in the student center, the dining hall, the chapel, and the library. This stole, made over the course of her visit, is signed by over 250 faculty, staff, and students of the university, as well as community members. The cloth comes from Africa and has many symbols on it, including the West African Adinkra symbol GYE NYAME which means “except for God.” This unique and beautiful symbol is ubiquitous in Ghana. With the help of Selina French in the Costume Shop and faculty member Meagan Bos, we created this stole to donate to the Shower of Stoles Project in support of LGBT people and the struggle for justice. The University Chaplain, the Reverend Kathleen Buckley, has a stole in the collection that was donated by the First Presbyterian Church of Troy, NY in 1996. This is one of fifteen stoles from members, elders, deacons, and pastoral staff at West Hollywood Presbyterian Church (WHPC). West Hollywood Presbyterian Church is a historical icon in the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community as well as the Welcoming Congregations movement. WHPC was at the forefront of the civil rights movement in Los Angeles and in the early 1960's began to close each service by singing the civil rights anthem "We Shall Overcome" - a tradition that continues to this day. As early as 1964 (five years before the Stonewall rebellion), West Hollywood Presbyterian Church hosted what is believed to be the first openly Gay Men's "Rap" Group in the city of Los Angeles and the church began to minister to the spiritual needs of the Gay & Lesbian community who had been drawn by its message of inclusiveness. Soon nationally known spiritual author Chris Glaser would launch "The Lazarus Project" at WHPC - A program to advocate for Gay & Lesbian spiritual and human rights. In October of 1984, WHPC called an openly gay man, the Reverend Dan Smith, to serve as its pastor. Dan continues to be the only minister in the country serving a Presbyterian congregation who went through the entire call and installation process as an "out" gay man. While proudly continuing its tradition of progressive spirituality and activism, this multi-cultural congregation feeds approximately 4,000 hungry and homeless people each year, builds homes for economically-challenged families under the "Habitat for Humanity" program, offers an HIV Spiritual Support Group, provides a "Children's Church" program and continues to openly take stands on political issues involving civil rights. West Hollywood Presbyterian also claims to espouse a theology that is "perhaps the most pro-feminist in Los Angeles." Dellevue, owner and operator of a fishing and boat rental concession at the City Park Casino, Monday defended his policy restricting the use of his boats. He responded following the appearance there of the Rev. David E. Solomon, pastor of the Metropolitan Community Church of New Orleans. The Rev. Mr. Solomon protested a sign at the business which reads,” Pedal Boats Not Rented to Two Men or Two Boys or Man and Boy (over 12 years)” He said “the sign has to go. It’s discrimination. Nobody’s going to tell me who I can take out in my boat which I paid for to rent.” The clergyman carried several of his own signs as he picketed on Monday. Dellevue explained why this policy has been strictly enforced since his father started the business in 1929: “Pedals boats are more delicate than other boats because of the moving parts. You get two men or boys in the boat and if one wants to go forward and the other backward the pedals will break off when pressure is exerted too forcibly.” He added, “through my 35 years of experience with these boats, if we did not have such a rule, there would be no pedal boats for anyone. There is too much breakage damage and vandalism on all the boats. You have to protect your business. We’re trying to prevent vandalism, breakage and repair work, which is a year round operation. Sonnie Swenston Stole Text SONNIE Denomination Presbyterian Church (USA) Contribution Date 1995 Contribution Story This stole was one of the original 80 stoles that were on display on Sept. 16, 1995 when I set aside my ordination before Heartland Presbytery (see stole #1 for details). Measuring little more than two feet long overall, and less than two inches wide, it may very well be the smallest stole in the collection. It is a miniature symbol for a woman who is small of stature, but has has an enormous heart and spirit about her. For many years Sonnie has been active in the More Light movement, in the Lazarus Project where she was honored for her volunteer services, and in many other efforts for social justice and equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender folk. Sonnie is an ordained Presbyterian elder, and has served as Clerk of Session at Baldwin Park Presbyterian Church in the Los Angeles area.
