I came out during my seminary years but had to keep closeted for fear I would not be ordained were I discovered to be gay. Just a few years after my ordination, the Reform Jewish movement officially opened my alma mater’s doors to gay students, while out LGBT rabbis were officially accepted in Reform Jewish congregations. My generation has been witness to the greatest revolution of public opinion of all time. From abject rejection and government-sponsored violent subjugation here in American to widespread LBGTQIQ inclusion, our relationships honored, recognized and celebrated, the last 40 years have swept mainstream America into a new era of acceptance and understanding. We have a long way to go, but I am immensely grateful to have lived during this time of transformation. Future generations, thankfully, will be able to take inclusion for granted. Each of us together and apart has paved the way, simply by living our lives with integrity. Happily, those of us in Maine know her and appreciate her ministry. Rabbi Isaacs is the spiritual leader of Beth Israel Congregation in Waterville and also faculty at Colby College, where she holds the Dorothy Levine Alfond chair in Jewish studies. Since 2015 she has also served as the director of Colby’s Center for Small Town Jewish Life. Yet another article, entitled “What a Quiet Revolutionary Looks Like,” describes some of her life journey this way: “Rachel Isaacs knew by the age of 13 she wanted to be a rabbi. Awareness of her sexuality came later. ‘I came out to myself around 14,’ she has shared. ‘I started the Gay-Straight Alliance in high school.’ At college, ‘being gay was in no way noteworthy. Openly lesbian, . . . she was ready [to go on to] rabbinical school, [but] Conservative Judaism was not ready for her. Isaacs spent two years at Reform Judaism’s Hebrew Union College—Jewish Institute of religion and transferred to the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York as soon as the school admitted openly gay and lesbian rabbinical students in 2007.” She was ordained by JTS in 2011. Currently, Rachel lives in Waterville with her wife Melanie Weiss and their two daughters. In 1984 Rabbi Offner became the first woman rabbi in the state of Minnesota. In 1987, she became the first out lesbian rabbi to serve in a “mainstream” congregation. Rachel Small Stokes Stole Text Rachel Small Stokes United Methodist Church Rachel began her life in the United Methodist Church, and felt called by God to the ministry at age thirteen. She served in leadership and chaplaincy positions through high school and college, and preached several times for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s Wesley Foundation. Her gifts for ministry were highly affirmed, and after college she accepted a call to become a United Methodist US-2 Missionary. During that time, she also became more and more aware that she was a lesbian. After her mission service, she went to the UMC seminary, Candler School of Theology at Emory University, and prepared herself to become a closeted clergywoman. However, as she saw the anger, rancor and hate in the upper echelons of her beloved denomination, that choice became untenable. She eventually made the very difficult decision to leave the United Methodist Church and to join the United Church of Christ, a denomination that welcomed her and many others with open arms. Hers is a story with a happy ending for everyone but the UMC. She was ordained in the UCC in 2009, and married her partner of seven years in 2012. The affair was conducted by the Council for Religion and the Homosexual, which has been established by Episcopal, Methodist, Lutheran and United Church of Christ leaders to try to integrate homosexuals into the Christian community. Three police cars were stationed outside the scene at California Hall, Polk street and Golden Gate avenue, and a police photographer took pictures of arriving homosexuals and their friends, the ministers said. At about 10p.m. Inspectors Rudolph Nieto and Richard Castro, from the sex crimes detail, entered the hall, but were met by two attorneys for the council, Evander Smith, 42, with offers at 333 Franklin street, and Herbert Donaldson, 37, of 6 Lloyd street. They advised the inspectors they had no right to inspect the private party without a search warrant, said the Rev. Ted McIlvenna of the Glide Foundation, one of the sponsoring organizations. The attorneys were arrested on charges of interfering with police officers in the performance of their duty and taken to Northern Station. The Rev. Lewis E. Durham, program director of the Foundation, and the Right Rev. James A. Poke, Episcopal Bishop of California, talked over the plans with Police Chief Thomas Cahill last week—but the police later tried to "persuade the operators of California Hall to cancel the rental agreement with the council. The first five are identical designs with a name and personal symbol added to each. Elder Ralph Carter has been active in the Welcoming movement for many years, serving on the local and national boards of More Light Presbyterians, and as MLP's Resources coordinator. He is a past recipient of the Inclusive Church Award for his tireless commitment to MLP at every level. Third Church prides itself on having been in the vanguard of movement and change throughout its history. In 1953, Lilian Alexander brought to the session of Third Church a proposal to ordain women as clergy in the Presbyterian Church. Her overture passed through the session to the local presbytery and on to the General Assembly, where it was adopted, opening the way for the first woman, Margaret Towner, to be ordained in 1956. Third has a long history of peace and justice activism throughout the world. They are a More Light congregation, working for the full inclusion of LGBT persons in the life and leadership of the church. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. John 13:34 Ralph Johnson did not need incentive like getting his hands on the family car to attend Epworth League. He was a faithful participant from the start. As a young man, he stretched his spiritual wings, feeding an enthusiasm for youth ministry, certifying as a lay preacher and, for a time, even considering a call to the lay ministry. However, when, after a long struggle, he accepted his sexual orientation and met his life partner Cedric, he decided on a different direction in life. They built a life and a successful floral business together and enriched the lives of our family with love and support. Ralph remained a faithful member of the United Methodist Church, serving God through music, numerous acts of kindness and, of course, flowers, until his death by homicide in 1989. Because he was gay, his death was investigated both as a hate crime and as a crime of opportunity. His assailants were never caught, so the reason for his senseless death is known only to them and to God. What we do know is that we miss him very much. Given by Laurel's family to honor her wishes to share her brother's story and to support the ministry of the Shower of Stoles. Denomination United Methodist Church Contribution Date 2001 Contribution Story Ralph's stole is green linen, with flowers embroidered down the center of the entire stole. The United Methodist Church's red and black "Cross and Flame" symbol is on the bottom of one panel, and on the bottom of the other panel is a photograph of Ralph and his sister, Laurel, each with an arm around the other, standing on the front steps of a home. The stole was given to us by a member of Ralph's family when I was in Toledo, Ohio a couple of years ago participating in an ecumenical conference. Ralph, I'm told, was a remarkable, faithful, man of God, and was a very active lay leader in the United Methodist Church from high school until he was murdered. Although Ralph's assailant was never caught, and therefore the motive was never established conclusively, I was told that the evidence overwhelmingly suggested that it was a hate crime and that it was treated as such. (Note: Epworth League was a youth ministry of the United Methodist Church) Ralph is one of three gay men represented in the Shower of Stoles collection who were murdered in hate crimes. This is one of the six stoles that I took with me everywhere I went. Ralph Morey Stole Text (Handwritten) RALPH MOREY DUPC ROCHESTER, NY Denomination Presbyterian Church (USA) Contribution Date 1996 Contribution Story This is one of about two dozen stoles donated by members of DUPC in early 1996. Most of the stoles arrived without names or narratives. However, we have been told that most of the donors are "out" LGBT persons, unnamed but not necessarily anonymous. DUPC was at the center of a pivotal moment in the history of the Welcoming movement in the Presbyterian Church. In 1978 the General Assembly acted to bar the ordination of "self-avowed, practicing homosexuals." However, an exception was added to the action which exempted those ordained before 1978 from future judicial action. This clause allowed DUPC in 1991 to call the Rev. Dr. Jane Adams Spahr to become a co-pastor of the church; Janie had been ordained prior to 1978. However, the Presbyterian Church broke its trust and in 1991 the denomination's highest judicial body barred Janie from being installed. In response, DUPC called Janie to be an "Evangelist," and formed That All May Freely Serve to allow Janie to preach, educate and challenge church structures at DUPC and throughout the country.
