Bob Jones, who died of AIDS in August, 1992. Bob was raised in the United Methodist Church in Kansas, where, in the mid-seventies, he had a same-sex relationship blessing. Shortly after the ceremony, the bishop found out and Bob and his partner were asked to leave the church. In 1978 Bob was licensed as clergy in the Metropolitan Community Church. He moved to Liverpool, England in 1988 where he served the MCC congregation until his death. I was raised in the Pentecostal Assemblies in Britain. After attending Mattersey Bible College, I began pastoral ministry and was licensed by the Assemblies of God in 1980. The following year I was outed and ousted. After spending several years exploring a vocation in the Anglican Church, I joined Metropolitan Community Church and in 1988 because transfer clergy. My ordination was affirmed by MCC in 1996 upon moving to the USA. This stole was given to me upon my completion of seminary, the Samuel DeWitt Proctor School of Theology at Virginia Union University in Richmond, VA. Brent Dugan was the well-loved pastor of the Community Presbyterian Church of Ben Avon, Pittsburgh, PA, for 18 years. While there he was very active in the Malawi Partnership between Pittsburgh Presbytery and the Synod of Blantyre, Malawi, Africa, and founded the Community Theater Players in Ben Avon. Before Ben Avon, Brent served two churches in West Virginia after graduating from the Pittsburgh Theological Seminary in 1972. During the memorial service for Brent, his family shared how, at age five, he had built a pulpit from cinder blocks in the backyard to practice preaching. Five days before taking his life, Brent had accepted a call to the Mendocino Presbyterian Church in California. When he disappeared, Brent expected to be disgraced on a local TV 11 o’clock news as a minister possibly violating the rules of his church. Before throwing himself on the mercy of God, the Father, with his Lord, Jesus Christ, at his side, Brent wrote letters to his friends, loved ones, and colleagues in ministry. That Brent was gay came out in these letters after his death. In his letter to the Pittsburgh Presbytery, Brent shared that he had hoped all his life to be swept off his feet by a woman, but that this never happened. So he devoted himself to his church family, to his sister’s children, and to his community. This devotion was deep and moving for everyone he met and yet his closest friends comment that there was a private place in Brent to which he never gave them access. Brent shared after his death that he had had sexual encounters with a man. He exhorted us all to live exemplary lives. To his congregation, Brent wrote, “This incident [his death] will not be easy to overcome, but overcome you must. You are the people of Jesus Christ, God’s Chosen. At 18, I fell in love with a woman and thought that ministry would never be possible. God wouldn’t let me go, however, and I was ordained at age 31 in the Presbyterian Church (USA) in 1988 during their “Don’t ask, don’t tell” period. After five years of “hiding,” something new began to stir in me. After a year of discernment, First Congregational UCC, Huntington, West Virginia extended a call to me, and my journey as an “out” lesbian in the United Church of Christ began. Rev. Christopher Ian George Stole Text Rev. Christopher Ian George 1949-2009 Metropolitan Community Church Rev. Christopher George was a man of God with a welcoming spirit and a heart of compassion. Christopher’s spiritual journey began in the Church of England, where he grew up. In his early twenties, he immigrated to Canada where he met is life partner of 35 years, Gordon Allsopp. Christopher experiences a call to ordained ministry and began to explore his call with the Anglican Church of Canada. He discovered they were unable to incorporate his spirituality and sexuality with the same level of comfort that Christopher had, and this left him feeling unable to follow God’s call on his life. In the late eighties, Christopher and Gordon began attending MCC Winnipeg where they were joined in Holy Union. This began Christopher’s journey with MCC and again stirred his call to ministry. In 2000, he was ordained at MCC Lubbock, TX by Rev. Elder <a href="https://www.lgbtran.org/Profile.aspx?ID=11">Troy Perry</a>, the found of Metropolitan Community Churches. Christopher served as Associate Pastor of MCC Lubbock and as Senior Pastor of Victory Garden MCC in Clovis, NM. MCC provided him the opportunity to live out his faith as an openly gay man, and fulfill the lifelong call of God in his heart. As I look back, it was a call that has been on my life since I first said “yes” to God as a freshman in high school. I just kept saying no for a variety of reasons. One of those reasons was that a gay man couldn’t be a minister, according to my conservative bible college professors and pastors during that period of my life. In 2004, God got really serious, or maybe I started listening better. The first time was around the communion table at Lake Harriet Christian Church, where I heard the message of extravagant welcome, that all are welcome around the table, period, end of sentence. God accepted me as I was, and, in fact, loved me because of it. In that sacred moment, I heard God’s call to return to ministry, that God wasn’t done with me yet. On October 15, 2008, a crisp fall day at West Des Moines Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), the people of the Upper Midwest Region of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) overwhelmingly voted to allow ordination of all of God’s children, lifted a 20+ year ban on such ordinations. That day, God tapped me on the shoulder and reminded me of the call, and in 2010, I started my seminary education. February 28, 2015 marks an important day in our region’s history, and for our wider church. I will be the first openly GLBTQ person ordained since the ban was lifted. The beauty of extravagant welcome, of “All Means All” will be on display for the church and all to see, and we will dance in the grace and delight of God. Rev. It bears the symbol of the resurrection, a butterfly, and reflects my hope and prayer that, once again, the church as a Body of Christ will experience a resurrection to the new life when gay and lesbian pastors will be able to live their lives as ordained clergy within the ELCA – without the fear of exclusion if and when they find a partner with whom to share their lives. Bahr United Church of Christ Cleveland, OH Archwood United Church of Christ in Cleveland, Ohio, took a risk over 14 years ago to call me as an out gay pastor – the first church in Ohio to do so. Since 1993, Archwood has grown into a vibrant Open and Affirming, multiracial, multicultural congregation actively engaged with its urban neighbors in need. Half the congregation is LGBT; one third of the church is African American, plus Hispanics and Asian Americans. We also have a sizable Sunday School, including senior high youth and a seminarian. Dr. Linda Patrick Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) Indiana As a Closeted Lesbian, I served as a senior pastor of a mid-sized congregation and worked as a teaching pastor in the Indianapolis area. I had just received my Doctor of Ministry degree from Christian Theological Seminary when I came OUT in 2000. Later that year, my judicatory “lost” my personal file, including my contact information and all documentation that I had ever attended seminary, been ordained, or served the church as a pastor. For years, I heard nothing from our Region. I had been in Search and Call, hoping to be called to a new parish, but communications quit coming. I gave up seeking a church as I had to make a living, and returned to my previous vocation as a registered nurse. Finally, in 2010, it came to my attention that I no longer had standing in Indiana. When I made this discovery and petitioned our Region for reinstatement, I was told that, now that I was OUT, I was not eligible for be re-instated as Clergy with Standing and, hence, barred from serving as clergy in any of our churches. Three O&A congregations, along with previous professors and pastors petitioned on my behalf for my reinstatement. Finally, in 2013, when the Church in Indiana dropped the ban, ordaining LGBT persons, my standing was reinstated. Even though I had been effectively silenced for thirteen years at the height of my ministry, I have returned to church life. I am actively serving as a retired pastor, volunteering to lead a ministry team at Central Christian Church, where my wife and I are members. We are also active members of the GLAD Alliance. Beginning with the ordination of my great-great grandfather, Thomas King Doty in 1834 by Bishop Osmon C. Baker, our family line continued with my own ordination as a United Methodist Elder in 1978. That rich tradition of 162 years was abruptly broken by my outing in October of 1996. I was then the Senior Pastor of a 3,300-member United Methodist congregation in Corpus Christi, Texas. I began my full-time ministry in that church in 1977 as an Associate Pastor and returned in 1989 as the Senior Pastor. It had been a glorious experience. The great irony of my outing is that I was then a non-practicing gay man – faithful both to my wife and to the Discipline of the UMC. Regardless, the news sent the church into an uproar. Two protests were hastily organized by members of the congregation. I was told that on the following Communion Sunday, one group planned to jeer when I began preaching. Another group was going to refuse taking Communion from my hands. After gathering at the alter rail, the protesters planned to drink the juice from the small glass, place the piece of uneaten bread in it, and hand it back to me. Needless to say, I found the prospect of doing any further ministry under those conditions intolerable. I resigned my pulpit eight days after the news broke. Suddenly I had no profession, no income, no home, no marriage, no place in the community. My outing set me on a path searching for a livelihood and another denomination to accept me. I found a blessed home in the United Church of Christ. Twelve jobs and five years later, I received a call to Hammond Street Congregational Church in Bangor, Maine. May God forgive “the people called Methodist” for the pain and shame that has been wreaked on so many LGBT clergy and those who they love! Dr. Nadean Bishop Stole Text When she was five years old, Nadean felt called to go to Nigeria as a missionary, later realizing that only women missionaries were allowed to preach by Southern Baptists. Forty-five years later she matriculated at Pacific School of Religion, and received the M.Div. degree in 1985 and became pastor of the Northside Community Church in Ann Arbor, Michigan, as a closeted lesbian. When she was called to pastor the University Baptist Church in Minneapolis in 1992, she became the first "out" ordained American Baptist LGBT person to be called to a pastorate. During the intervening years, Nadean had married, had four children, completed a Ph.D. in Victorian Poetry at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, divorced, taught at Eastern Michigan University for 25 years, and recognized that she was a lesbian. As the American Baptist campus minister at the University of Michigan, she began to counsel with LGBT persons, and this became a major ministry while she was pastor at UBC in Minneapolis. Nadean's donation of a spangled party dress is to exemplify that her life as a lesbian pastor and counselor has not been a hardship but has been like a party. In June of 1996, she and her partner, Sheryl Palmer, expressed their commitment to one another in a service at University Baptist Church, complete with communion and anointing with oil. They share a home on a ten-acre horse farm in Stillwater, Minnesota. Denomination American Baptist/USA Contribution Date 2006 Contribution Story This is one of my favorite pieces in the Shower of Stoles collection. It is made all the more unique when one considers the donor -- a distinguished, snowy-haired grandmother. It is, though, a perfect reflection of Nadean Bishop. Though the path she followed had its share of rocky places, Nadean has embraced life to the fullest, and her ministry has exuded grace, compassion, steadfast love, and much positive energy. The emotional and spiritual weight of this collection -- the bigotry and oppression, the loss of careers and dreams, even the loss of life in a few cases -- can be overwhelming. This whimsical piece does not allow us to rest in victim hood, but moves us on to a place of faithfulness, love and joy.
