When I fell in love with a woman, I knew I would have to leave my beloved ministry. I could not with any integrity serve the church, preaching of God's love and justice for all people knowing the PC(USA), and several people in the pew, could not accept me, or worse, would condemn me. Integrity, for me, is the integration of my internal feelings with my external actions. I could have no integrity if I pretended to live one way so that people would accept me, knowing full well this is not who I am. The sentence, "I found God in myself, and I loved her, I loved her fiercely," became my fully integrated self. Outside the church, I have felt this full integration of me, God, and the world. Elizabeth Hall Designed by Quilt Artist Renee Kroner Hoagland Having been raised to believe we are all equal and should be treated with dignity and respect, it is sad to realize not much has changed in the last 75 years. 75 years ago Hitler started his campaign of terror and hate. Everyone knows about the near annihilation of the Jews. However, few people know the extent of Nazi madness and how many other groups of people were selected for death. As each group was selected for deportation to the death camps, the Nazis needed a way to categorize their captives so they could keep accurate records of their madness. They gave each group a colored triangle to wear on their camp uniforms. Jews wore yellow stars (two triangles), criminals wore green and homosexuals wore pink triangles. There were many others, sadly too many to mention here. I wanted to express my sadness over the fact that we still find it impossible to accept those members of our society who are different. The Bible teaches us that we are all God's children. Why then, do so many of us believe his love is only for a select few? This stole is designed to remind us that we still carry old prejudices and more work needs to be done to bring God's love to all. The dark pieced background represents the rigid attitudes and prejudices towards the sexually disenfranchised. As well as the loneliness and despair they must feel by not being able to fulfill their calling to serve the church and live openly. The "Holocaust" triangles remind us the LGBT members of our society are still discriminated against, even those called to serve God. It is meant to be uncomfortable to look at, thereby forcing us to address our prejudices. Rev. Jim David Little Stole Text The Rev. Jim David Little Presbyterian Church Jim earned a Masters of Divinity from Union Theological Seminary in New York City. He was ordained as a minister in the Presbyterian Church. He then served in the Richmond Fellowship Foundation in England. He had difficulty obtaining a call when he returned to the U.S. after honestly confessing his homosexual orientation. Rejected and disappointed, he eventually left the church. He was an intelligent, kindhearted and gentle man whose gifts are missed. He died of AIDS in 1990. In 1994, I was granted in-care status in the Central Southeast Association in the Ohio Conference UCC.  In 1997, I was ordained at First Congregational UCC  in Huntington, WV.</p> <p>It is exciting, wonderful, and a blessing to serve as pastor and teacher in UCC churches and colleges. Kit identifies as a queer, trans, Chinese-American child of God. Kit moved to New England for college, and never left, attending Yale Divinity School and eventually moving to Maine in 2004. Kit serves on the Commission on Ministry, supporting others in their call to Ministry, is part of the Leadership Team for Arise Portland (an emergent, queer affirming inter-spiritual community in Maine) and works in a brewery—not quite water into wine but certainly the journey from hops to beer is its own kind of sacred. Kit is passionate about gender justice, about expansive hospitality in the church, especially in worship, and about children, youth, and LGBTQ folks. During his 23 years at Glide he mentored and supported hundreds of community activists – always with kindness, humility and optimism. He helped establish the Asian Law Caucus, serving on its Board for 21 years and as chairperson from 1993-1997; chaired the Wendy Yoshimura Fair Trial Committee; was arrested for a sit-in protest against martial law in the Philippines; participated in human rights support trips to South Korea, Taiwan, the Philippines and Okinawa; taught at the Pacific School of Religion; supported Redress and Reparations for Japanese and Japanese Americans incarcerated during WWII. I was thirteen when I came out as a gay man. Being active in my youth group, volunteering for committees, and engaging in social justice were all things that I loved. I couldn't imagine my life without church. And so I became open to the idea that religious leadership was my path.</p> <p></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-top:12pt;"><span style="font-size:10pt;font-family:Arial, 'sans-serif';">After graduating from Harvard Divinity School in June of 2009, St. John’s ordained me to the ministry. The ceremony included many of my mentors, my family, and people who had watched me grow up in the church. It was a moving ceremony.</span></p> <p></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-top:12pt;"><span style="font-size:10pt;font-family:Arial, 'sans-serif';">I now serve as the minister of the Unitarian Universalist Church in Livermore, CA. That congregation is also struggling to create a more just and compassionate world for all people, LGBT people included. MALCOLM HIMSCHOOT</strong> <br />United Church of Christ<br />Denver, CO</p> <p>I transitioned from female gender expression to male gender expression when I was 23 years old. I was in seminary at the time, and the Shower of Stoles Project paid a visit to our campus. I walked around reading stories of people who could not follow their call into ecclesial ministry. Little did I dream that I, as a transsexual, would be able to do so! I was ordained in 2005 at the age of 27. My local church and pastor carried me all the way.
