<text>In 1993 St. Paul-Reformation Luther developed a long range plan. Among the plan’s primary goals was to call and ordain an openly gay or lesbian pastor by the year 2000.

After careful and prayerful study, discussion and exploration of ways to achieve our goal, the congregation voted in December 2000 to extend a call to Anita Hill, a lesbian in a committed relationship. The congregation made this decision despite the ELCA’s prohibition against gays and lesbians in committed relationships serving as pastors. The vote was 176 to 0. And with that vote, our congregation affirmed that it could no longer, in good conscience, abide by a policy it considered unjust and at odds with the gospel.

Though it is Anita who has been ordained, her ordination belongs to the entire congregation. Her witness, her willingness to stand on the front line and carry the flag on the issue of gay and lesbian ordinations has been an inspiration to us all. With our unanimous vote, we have said we will no longer simply stand behind her, but we are prepared now to stand right alongside her as the struggle for justice continues.

The stole that travels in this exhibit is signed by the members of St. Paul-Reformation as a reminder that we are all on the call and ordination journey together.</text>

This stole was made in honor of all those who have found themselves, and now courageously live their Christ light in their world, ministering to ALL of God’s people, whether they belong to a church or not. It is a stole honoring the full spectrum of God’s creation, unlike the church seems able to do fully at this time. I pray that it will give hope of the wholeness of all, through the strands of time. We will be healed.

<text>At a wedding when I was 3 ½ years old, I discovered I was different from other little girls. The bride’s beauty struck no responsive chord in me as it did in my three older female cousins. During the wedding I watched the pastors, including my grandfather. I knew that someday I would be doing what I saw them doing.

Growing up in the Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod, I could not claim either the sexuality or the call to ministry that I knew were God’s gifts to me.

I graduated from Seminary and was ordained in 1990, and served two calls. I lived in compliance with the ELCA’s Visions and Expectations as a closeted lesbian person, in a gradual downward spiral of loneliness and isolation.

In spring of 2000, my Senior Pastor began to pray for the gift of companionship for me – a prayer I had never dared to pray for myself. In the spring of 2001, I quietly resigned my call to receive God’s gift of a life partner, hoping the ELCA would find a way to welcome me as a partnered lesbian pastor.

In fall of 2002, I was in a safe place to share my story with the church as part of the “Journey Together Faithful” dialogue. My name was removed from the ELCA clergy roster in December 2002. I continue to attend an ELCA congregation, using God’s gifts in worship leadership and catechetical instruction.</text>

<text>This green stole comes from a Pastor and family in Minnesota whose child is a lesbian.

It comes with the desire for the church to learn to listen to its gay and lesbian children. Until we are able to hear their stories and recognize that these are children of God, baptized and taught in our congregations of the grace of God, this will remain an unresolved issue for the church.

Our earnest prayer is that the church will find the courage to listen to those stories and to recognize them in the leadership of the Holy Spirit, calling us to a new day and a new approach to this part of God’s created people!

This is not a moral issue! It is an issue of who some of us are created to love! And the gift of being able to love is a gift which has the power to open us to the love of God. Let’s keep talking until we have room in the church for all of God’s children.

<text>In recent decades, many thousands in Lutheran Campus Ministry and in the Lutheran Student Movement on many campuses have faithfully reflected on the situation of homosexuals in church and society and have sought justice on their behalf.

We have grown to know many committed Christian students, faculty, lay staff, and clergy who are gay or lesbian.

Phil Knutson
Rollie Severson
Doug Mose
Kevin Maly

It is difficult for the church as an institution to take first steps. There was a long time when Lutheran women could not be ordained. The first to be ordained is a dear friend of ours, Elizabeth Platz, Campus Pastor at the University of Maryland.

This stole was originally given to Ted by Beth as a symbol of gratitude. We now pass it on in hope another first will occur.

Now is the time for the ELCA to also ordain those gay and lesbian people who live in livelong committed partnerships.

In peace and joy,

The background of the stole is scarlet representing we are still in in an age, and in the midst of a church that is killing both the message and the messengers of God’s good news.

The word of hope comes in hearing the voice of God naming and claiming all of us in our baptism – “beloved.” Not beloved, if you will change, simply “beloved.”

The somewhat translucent writing and sign of the baptismal shell represent the Spirit’s work in our midst, and the hope that one day soon we as the church will all live into our full identity as beloved people of God, no exceptions.

I believe that day is coming.

<text>This stole is presented in honor and memory of Pastor Rollie Severson and his Partner, John Paul Fetterman. Rollie died of AIDS related causes in 1989, while serving as Campus Pastor at the University of Miami, Coral Gables, Florida.

Rollie spent his life as a Lutheran Pastor afraid of being “discovered.” He was a good and faithful pastor. Prior to serving in Miami, he was Campus Pastor at the University of Minnesota.

A couple of weeks after Rollie’s funeral, John Paul came to me and asked if “a Jewish boy would be allowed to worship at Hope” (where Rollie was a member and where I served as Pastor). You see, Rollie would never bring John Paul to church with him, fearing he would be suspected of being gay. Now John Paul only wanted to come to church and sit in the pew where Rollie always sat, a treat that had been impossible while Rollie was alive.

Rollie loved the Lutheran Church and served it faithfully. I pray that this stole in the “For All the Saints” stole project will say to the ELCA, and to the world, that Rollie Severson was not just a good pastor, he was a gay pastor.

This stole is a testimony to his life, his goodness, and his God-given sexual orientation. I love you and miss you, Rollie and John Paul.

<text>Sixteen graduating seniors (of 26) at the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia have written a letter to Bishop H. George Anderson, presiding bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, calling for continuing conversation and review of the ELCA’s position on ordination, consecration, and commissioning of gay and lesbian persons.

Sent late last month, the letter was the outcome of a process of prayer and conversation over the course of the semester, including a day-long retreat. It was copied to all synodical bishops, the Division for Ministry, Commission for Women, Candidacy Committees of Region 7, and the other seven ELCA seminaries.

Class co-president Margaret Spring said, “Over the past few years we have witnessed a number of friends make the difficult decision between their call to ordained ministry and to their call to a committed relationship with a person of the same gender. We feel it is time to add our voices to the church’s conversation about issues of sexuality and rostered ministry. It is our hope that even as we graduate from the seminary that this conversation will be on-going, at LTSP as well as the wider church. We are delighted that several continuing students have committed themselves to this process.”

It is our hope and prayer that the leadership gifts of our gay and lesbian brothers and sisters will soon be fully received and celebrated by the ELCA.

<text>“What does the Lord require of you but that you do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with your God?” Micah 6:8

We are members of the Lutheran Volunteer Corps living out the tenets of community, simplicity, and social justice in the Midwest. As part of our commitment to a year of service, we live in community and together we are seeking to do what is right and just. Our dedication to social justice has opened our eyes to the injustices that permeate all institutions in society, including the church.

We believe that all people are teachers and that we can learn from one another. For many of us, the church is one of the most influential teachers in our lives. When the Lutheran church teaches love and inclusiveness yet practices intolerance and exclusiveness, the messages become blurred and inconsistent. The church is a community where relationships are developed and our faith is nurtured. Diversity in sexual orientation, race, class, gender, and age strengths this community and broadens our concept of faith.

We, 37 members, staff, and friends of Lutheran Volunteer Corps in Chicago, Minneapolis/St. Paul, and Milwaukee call on the ELCA to change the guidelines in its Vision and Expectations document and the Definitions and Guidelines for Discipline document, so our community can reach its full potential. We also stand in solidarity with those who have been barred from serving their faith community because of their sexual orientation and pray for the day when all of God’s people will be fully accepted in the church.</text>

<text>This stole, with the conjoined circles beneath and intertwined with the cross, is a wedding stole. It was an ordination gift to John Carrier in 1985. Until November 1998, Pastor Carrier wore this stole at every wedding at which he presided, including the blessing of a lesbian couple’s life-long commitment to faithful life together. As part of a growing movement of ordained heterosexual colleagues who wish to stand in solidarity with the GLBT clergy, on Reformation Day, Pastor Carrier wore this stole in worship with his campus ministry community, and pledged to retire this and all other liturgically colored stoles in worship and weddings. He invited others to sign this stole as a statement of support for changing church policies in regards to blessing same-sex partnerships and the ordination of GLBT clergy. The following Friday, the stole was displayed at the “Open Door Conference” in Rochester, Minnesota, and participants of the conference were again invited to sign the stole. Then on November 3rd, at the Southeastern Minnesota Synod Theological Conference, Pastor Carrier preached on the subject at morning worship. At the conclusion of the service, he removed the stole for the last time and made it available for the Pastors and Associates in Ministry to likewise sign.

Pastor Carrier now wears only a rainbow stole whenever he vests, pledging to continue to do so until the Church’s policies have changed to include GLBT clergy who live in blessed union with a life partner.
