I give this stole in celebration of the life and ministry of my friend, Arlo. Arlo resigned his parish when the second draft of the sexuality paper was released from the ELCA. The parish I serve welcomes me as their loving, caring, energetic, and wise steward of God’s mysteries. If, however, “they” were to find out about my sexual orientation, none of the above would matter. My call would be denied, my gifts refused. And so I serve in silence; with joy and pain, love and anger, frustration and hope. Always hope. My partner is a pastor. Few people in town know that I have a partner and few who know my partner know that I exist as more than just another citizen. Few know that when they talk to their pastor at home I am frequently trying to avoid making noise so they will not suspect that someone else is there. Few people know that my partner has someone to go home to who loves her deeply. Few people in my partner’s congregation know that their pastor daily considers another occupation, but can’t leave because of a call from God to be in this place at this time. Planning for the future is difficult but at least when the future is here we will have something to deal with instead of the fear of what will happen. Our life together is, to some extent, on hold. Few people know that conversations between us frequently begin with “when I’m defrocked, then we can…” to be completed with “have children,” “go shopping together,” “go to church together,” “get support from a church community." Anonymous (I never revealed the truth) Stole Text This stole was first worn at my ordination into the ministry of the old American Lutheran Church in June of 1967. It was a gift from my parents, as were three other stoles to complete the set of white, purple, green, and red. I remember with what enthusiasm and delight I carefully selected four different ecclesiastical brocades and the symbols which I felt would best fit the seasons of the church year in which they would be worn. Those were days when one didn’t often recognize that it was possible to do anything but what society expected of a young man called to ministry: marriage, college, seminary, ordination, first call to a parish – and don’t reveal anything about one’s sexual orientation in the process. Now questions are being asked, and pastors are being removed from the ELCA, and others are being prevented from following God’s call along the path to ordination. After 32 years of faithful ministry to this church, I am not about to start answering questions that should never be asked in the first place. I struggle with the hypocrisy of that stance every day, but also know that I have been able to help some other folks deal with questions of sexual orientation in their lives and in the lives of those they love along the way. I will never openly lie about who I am, but neither will I fully reveal the truth about me, and risk losing the ministry to which I have devoted my life. I never revealed the truth to the parents who presented this stole on my ordination day. In 1967, I am not certain that they could have handled that information; they came out of an era that just didn’t understand. Perhaps this stole with which they gifted me might join with others in gifting this church with an understanding of the talents and people of whom we deprive ourselves when we, in all of our wisdom, place conditions and restrictions on people who have so much to offer, who seek to be faithful to the call of God in their lives and the life of this church. John L. Ames Stole Text I was ordained in 1989 and have served three calls since then. My first was in a parish and the other two have been with faith-based social service agencies. I am very out. It is nothing less than a miracle that the ELCA has not kicked me out. We have a Bishop here in the Metro. Chicago synod who is progressive on gay/lesbian issues. Anonymous Stole Text Every time I attend an ordination, I listen to the question asked of the ordinands: “Will you assume this office, believing that the Church’s call is God’s call to ministry of Word and Sacrament?” I listen, confident in my own call to ministry, but also aware that the church’s affirmation of that call depends on my continuing to lead a double life. For more than a decade I have struggled to find a balance between personal integrity and faithfulness to my call, between honesty to God and compliance with the church’s requirements. In the end, I have always come to the same conclusion: forced to choose between God’s call and institutional policy, I must heed my call. David Stole Text David and I were introduced as first year M. Div. Students. We sat together one evening in the middle of that year discussing our up-coming endorsement interviews. We were each praying for guidance. We were anticipating being asked about our stance on the recently drafted, proposed statement on human sexuality from the ELCA. David decided he would explain that his faith and theological education were leading him to advocate for the ordination of practicing homosexuals. He did so and was denied endorsement. David was neither a homosexual nor a social activist. He was a careful student of theology and a faithful disciple who felt that he saw something wrong in the way we (the ELCA) are approaching homosexuality in the church. He would like to have been involved in the continuing reformation of our denomination. The church has rejected the gifts which David would have brought to parish ministry, just as it has rejected the gifts of so many gay and lesbian candidates for ministry. He would have made a fine pastor. I offer this Lenten stole in his honor. Jay A. Wiesner Stole Text This stole is given in honor of Jay A. Wiesner, my seminary classmate and friend. Jay and I entered the ordination track in 1995, planning to graduate in 1999. During the years in which we studied together, I recognized in him many gifts for the practice of ministry: love for the study of Scripture, exceptional taken in vocal and instrumental music, deep compassion for people, and a sharp sense of humor. I couldn’t understand Jay’s frequent assertion that he felt like an outsider to the seminary community, until he revealed to me that he was gay, and had come to fully realize this truth in the context of all the difficult personal work which the candidacy process encourages us to do. Ironically, that same process now told him that he could only pursue ordination if he would agree to celibacy for the duration of his career, a gift with which Jay did not feel he had been blessed. Jay made the agonizing decision to withdraw from the ordination track, and from our class, to determine how to live out the call to ministry with integrity, in the full realization of his God-given identity. He’s not completely certain of his future in the church, but he’s made a conscious decision not to leave. I submit this stole as a sign of the future church, one which not only allows, but encourages gay and lesbian candidates, like my Brother Jay, just as enthusiastically as it had welcomed me to serve as an ordained minister of Word and Sacrament. Bill Stark Stole Text Reverend Stark – Pastor Stark – Pastor Bill – Bill – “The Archbishop.” So goes the progressive word picture that tells the story of my family’s relationship with Bill Stark. He was, first and foremost, our pastor. He became a good friend. We called Bill “The Archbishop” because he was what we referred to as “high church.” He loved the church and all of its rituals. They had special meaning for him, and he made them meaningful for his congregations. Bill wanted nothing more than to serve his church and his God but he found the restrictions the church placed on him as a gay man impossible to abide by. In time, Bill left our congregation, and finally, the ministry. Bill moved to Texas and became a parole officer. Within months he was dead – killed in cold blood. I don’t know if the crime was ever solved. I do know that the investigators assumed it was one of Bill’s parolees. I can’t help but wonder if Bill would be alive today if he had been able to stay in the ministry. I’m grateful that I and my family had the opportunity to know Bill, both as a pastor and as a friend. We had many wonderful discussions on a myriad of topics at my kitchen table. Bill taught me to really see beauty in ritual, to appreciate it more fully. He helped my children to understand that ministers are people, too. Solidarity Stole (St. James Lutheran Church) Stole Text In December of 1997, at our congregational meeting, St. James voted to become a Reconciling in Christ congregation. We framed that vote within the context of a broader welcoming statement that began, “St. James Lutheran Church holds ‘Welcoming’ in high esteem. The doors of our building and the hearts of our members are open to the wide variety of travelers which God might see fit to have pass our way. St. James is a welcoming congregation.” The statement went on from there to list the varieties of people we welcome. The list includes people of color, of diverse economic backgrounds, those whose background is not specifically Lutheran, and people with varying physical disabilities. This statement is part of the welcoming statement: “We welcome gay and lesbian members as a part of our congregation. To that end we say that gay and lesbian persons share with all others the worth that comes from being a unique individual created by God; that gay and lesbian people are welcome within the membership of this congregation upon making the same affirmation of faith that all other people make, and that as members of this congregation, gay and lesbian people are expected and encouraged to share in the sacramental and daily life of the congregation.” Pastor Jane Ralph’s resignation from her congregation, King of Glory, hit members of St. James hard because Pastor Ralph had served this congregation as an associate minister. The council wrote a letter of protest submitted to the Central States Synod Assembly as a resolution in June of 1998. Parishioners were invited to sign this stole in the weeks prior to the 1999 Central States Synod Assembly and it was displayed in a hospitality room there, as an unofficial part of the Assembly. We, at S. James, are proud to have the stole sent on to the Churchwide Assembly in Denver and again reaffirm our support for gay and lesbian clergy and the dignity of all homosexual persons. Solidarity Stole (Action for Reconciling Ministry) Stole Text Action for Reconciling Ministry (ARM) is a group of concerned members of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) who believe that the church’s current policy against clergy who are gay or lesbian must be challenged. ARM members are lay and clergy alike, with the common desire to see the church have the full benefit of all its ministers! We believe that Evangelical Freedom, an idea that Martin Luther liked a lot, makes it possible for lesbian or gay people to be fully members of our church, not deprived by their gender identity of the possibility of ordination. We know that ordination isn’t a right, but we also know that our church should not deny competent, caring individuals with a commitment to Christ’s ministry an opportunity to serve! Ruth Frost and Phyllis Zillhart Stole Text I give this stole in honor of the ministry of Ruth Frost and Phyllis Zillhart. Ruth and Phyllis attender Luther Theological Seminary at the time that I did. We shared classes. One class, I remember in particular, was Faith and Ministry. This class is taken by seniors after internship; it is an exercise in integrating book and experiential learning. Ruth and I were in the same section; what I remember is the gift of pastoral care she demonstrated in a case study she presented. I am not at all surprised at the call they have accepted at St. Francis. God has called and blessed them with the gifts of ministry, relationship, and parenting. Despite the loss of ELCA endorsement, the ministry of that congregation continues to flourish, and I believe that Ruth and Phyllis do as well. God’s blessings on them and all who step forward in “ecclesiastical disobedience” so that justice might be done.
