COMMUNITY OF CHRIST

Faaa, Tahiti

My name is Maire Hart.  I am a professional singer from Tahiti.  I discovered my homosexuality as a child, but I really experienced it at the age of 18, when I tried to be with men, but my orientation was really that of loving women.

When the public (my fans) found out about my sexuality, my popularity decline and I was deeply hurt in my heart. As a result, I became totally withdrawn and quite singing for a period of 15 years. Fifteen years of my life sacrificed. I abandoned my passion, my mission, what I loved most in the world, because of the accusing looks.

But most of all, I was not strong enough to fight against this shame that was killing me little by little. I was falling then so easily into drugs, by pure shame, and telling myself that I was not “normal.”

It is never easy for an artist to live with being a celebrity, but with a label that always brings mockery, insults and discrimination, and fear of the unknown. But I found the strength to overcome these problems, thanks to God and the prayers addressed to him, with a true, fervent desire to pull out of it. He was always there but I was so weak and blinded by the drugs that I was wandering in total darkness.

But one day I had enough of this shadowy world, understanding at last that I alone was ruining and wasting my life. I came across a verse that said, “One does not put a lamp under the table but on the table, so that it shines on everyone.” I felt like God had lifted me up. I got up all the courage I could muster, then I did everything I had to, to appear before you this evening, and I started singing again. I joined a prayer group.

Today, my primary gratitude will always be to God, for having never left me and for being my best father, friend, Savior, and captain of the ship.

Thank you, Lord. Thank you too, my Angels.

Bishop Allyson Abrams was baptized and nurtured in the Baptist churches of Birmingham, AL. It was there that her oratorical gift and musical gifts were evident. Bishop Abrams later attended seminary and received her M.Div and D.Min degrees. Bishop continued to serve in the Baptist Church and in 2008 was the youngest female to be “called” to a Black Baptist Church as their pastor in the City of Detroit. During this time she was very active in her community. She was a rising star on the Baptist scene. She served in many offices with the Council of Baptist Pastors of Detroit, but the one of esteem was Secretary of the Council. She was elected as Vice President of NAACP in South Oakland County, MI. She worked with many social justice organizations, including PFAW’s African American Ministers Leadership Council. She was the 3rd woman to ever preach for the Annual Session for the Progressive National Baptist Convention. She was known for her fiery stirring messages and ability to energize a crowd. She was one of the few seated Baptist Pastors to be consecrated prelate (presiding bishop) of her own fellowship, Pneuma Christian Fellowship.

In 2013, Bishop Abrams married the woman that she loved and wanted to share the rest of her life with. After being married for 6 months, Bishop Abrams stood in her pulpit, at the risk of losing everything she had gained in ministry, and told her congregation during Sunday morning worship that she had married a woman and that love was love. Her Detroit congregation that she pastored was separated on whether she should remain as pastor, so Bishop Abrams resigned as pastor of the congregation at the end of October 2013. After her disclosure to the Detroit congregation her story appeared in newspapers and media outlets all across the globe. Bishop Abrams was outcast from many organizations and lost contracts and jobs because of her sexuality. She was demonized and unwelcomed to come in pulpits across the country because she was a lesbian.

Bishop Abrams in 2014 knew that God still had a “call” on her life and that she still had a burning to preach and pastor God’s people, so she opened a new church in Silver Spring, MD, Empower-ment Liberation Cathedral, which is a church that celebrates LGBTQ Christians. She has been bringing healing to the community through her ministry and her testimony. Bishop Abrams now has a ministry that reaches people all across the globe through social media, live stream, and YouTube. Bishop Abrams and her wife, Bishop Emeritus Diana Williams are committed to justice work and advocacy in the LGBT community. ELC is affiliated with Association of Welcoming and Affirming Baptist and Metropolitan Community Churches. Bishop Abrams understands that there is an intersectional point between faith and orientation, and God meets us there.

In 1977 I was ordained as a deacon in the United Methodist Church at the annual conference held in Shreveport, Louisiana. I was presented with this stole. In 1979, I left the UMC and was ordained as a minister in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Camden, Arkansas. Every time I look at this stole I am saddened. It is a constant reminder that I can no longer serve in the denomination in which I grew up and loved so much. Even as a Disciple, it has been difficult. This is my 25th year of ordained ministry. In 1996, at the age of 50, I was called to serve full time in this Open and Affirming congregation that has welcomed me and my partner, Sandra Stratton. It has been a wonderful experience. In many ways it makes up for the many years of secular employment, brief interims, and serving in other capacities, all the while waiting to do what I knew in my heart I was called to do. They were not wasted years. I’m glad I kept the faith. I am delighted to be serving this church. I mourn that so many of my brothers and sisters have given up, moved on, or wait with inordinate patience for the church to recognize what God already knows: We, too, are called to serve.
