"We Are Everywhere": Mapping the Shower of Stoles

This segment of the exhibit was inspired by Barbara Lien, a donor to the collection who noted that LGBT+ people are everywhere - even smack-dab in the middle of rural Iowa, where she lived - and will always be everywhere.

In the spirit of furthering justice of all kinds, the stoles' location tags include what Native American/First Nations/Indigenous homelands the stoles' donors hailed from. This information was primarily gathered via Native-Land.ca, and supplemented by additional online research by a non-Indigenous, white intern at the LGBTQ Religious Archives Network. To interact with the map, you may click on an individual stole (indicated by the blue markers), or the clusters of stoles, indicated by the two colored circles. When you click on a cluster of stoles, the clusters spread to become more specific, showing how many stoles are from particular regions of the United States. (Some of the photographed stoles are identified geographically as simply being from "the United States." These stoles are spread randomly throughout the map.) You may continue clicking on these clusters of stoles, until you access the point in the map where each stole in the region is represented by an individual, blue stole marker. This feature allows you to see how many stoles were donated from particular towns and cities.

You may zoom in and out on the map by using the controls in the map's upper left corner.
