Church of the Beloved Disciple at the New York City Pride March

Members of the Church of the Beloved Disciple march beneath the congregation's name banner and the heraldic standard during New York City's annual Pride Parade, circa late 1970s - early 1980s. By this time, the church had become a familiar presence in Pride marches, returning each year with banners, vestments, and religious symbols that proclaimed the compatibility of Christian faith and LGBTQ identity. The procession embodied the church's enduring mission to make visible a sacramental tradition in which LGBTQ people could worship openly, celebrate their relationships, and participate fully in the life of the Church.
