Processional Crucifix

Carved by the noted ecclesiastical sculptor Robert ("Robbie") Robbins, this processional crucifix was commissioned for the Church of the Beloved Disciple and served as one of the principal symbols of the congregation's public and liturgical life. Carried in solemn liturgies, feast day processions, and in public marches, the cross reflects Robbins's distinctive synthesis of medieval and modern forms. Christ is depicted as the crucified King, crowned and reigning from the Tree of Life, while the interlaced Celtic ornament that fills the cross evokes the eternal and unbroken life of God. Robbins, whose work adorned numerous Roman Catholic and Anglo-Catholic churches along the East Coast, created this crucifix specifically for the Church of the Beloved Disciple.
