Processional Banner of St. John the Beloved

This painted processional banner depicts St. John the Beloved, patron of the Church of the Beloved Disciple, in a style derived from the church's celebrated stained-glass window. Mounted on purple felt with decorative tassels, the banner was carried in liturgical processions, ecumenical events, and New York City public marches, including Pride celebrations and other outdoor religious observances. Designed collaboratively by Leo M. Joseph and John Darcy Noble, it became one of the congregation's most recognizable visual emblems, appearing in numerous photographs documenting the church's public witness throughout the 1970s.
