This restored portrait depicts the Rev. George Augustine Hyde shortly after the founding of the Eucharistic Catholic Church in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1946. Founded by Hyde, the church was the first documented Christian church in the United States to openly welcome homosexual men and women into its sacramental life without requiring celibacy or concealment. Hyde's pioneering ministry profoundly influenced the development of LGBTQ-affirming sacramental Christianity and laid the ecclesial foundation upon which later communities, including the Church of the Beloved Disciple, were built.
